Re: Buying 2nd hand grinder
I have a grinder for sale - it is neither old, nor abused. Just a simple matter of up grading, which we all do..

Re: Buying 2nd hand grinder
Be careful bidding for used commercial grinders in those internet sites. It is unusual for a grinder in a cafe to be owned by the cafe, it is usually owned by the coffee supplier. You wouldnt want to buy what in the end may consititute stolen goods.
A grinders "value", or its "worth", are very debateable, and depend on who owns it. Let me explain.
To a coffee merchant, a used grinder irrespective of its age, has to be worth atleast half if not two thirds the value of a new replacement. So if a grinder sells for $1000.00 new, then you wouldnt expect to pay any less than say $500 ish if you were buying it from the merchant.
The reason is, a grinder irrespective of its age, can with a tidy up and a new set of plates, go straight back into another cafe and do another few years work. It doesnt pay a coffee merchant to sell it privately for very little, and have to pay lots more to replace it.............
If you get a second hand cafe grinder for a nice price, and its legit (as in not snaffled away from a coffee supplier owner), then you have done very well indeed.
On the other hand a private seller may well let one go for lower because they dont have to adopt the same reasoning as a merchant.
Theres always more than one side to a story, happy hunting!

Re: Buying 2nd hand grinder
The first thing I saw when I opened the box for my new Mini was a note saying it was for professional use only. I can say that I ignored this advice and have been using it happily since.
If you come across a good quality grinder then you could buy new burr sets for it but you would first need to determine why its selling.
Ive seen a few advertised on fleabay from people claiming the grinder was from a closed cafe or a spare. Ive bid for these but never won one (always kept my max bid under $20o. Somethimes they sell for only a $100 less than a new one. If you can afford it, get a new one. If its second hand, see if you can inspect it before buying.

Re: Buying 2nd hand grinder
The Mazzer Mini kind of sits on the fence...... it could be regarded as either a very high quality domestic or a low volume commercial grinder.Originally posted by afton link=1216603616/0#2 date=1216604390
Is Mazzer Mini a commercial or domestic grade?
Providing it hasnt been abused it should be a good buy (assuming a reasonable price compared to a new unit)....

If buying a commercial grade grinder..... it can save you some dollars. They are well built and will last for ever. You might need to replace the burrs..... but that is about all. Ive had two such grinders (both La Cimbali/DRM)...
THanks for replying JavaB
Is Mazzer Mini a commercial or domestic grade? How about Mazzer Super Jolly?

Re: Buying 2nd hand grinder
adton,

However if buying a domestic grade grinder - they are not built to the same standards and a significant part of their life has been used. If they have had low usage and been well looked after.... then (depending on the price) they might be a good buy.... but these arent that expensive new.... and come with a warranty which can be VERY useful....
Id personally be hesitant to purchase a second hand domestic grade grinder..... unless I knew its history.
