I had same experience changing up from Sunbeam EM0480 to Macap M2D, would add that there was a significant improvement in final flavours as well as noticeable reduction in variation of colour during extracting

I’m now a few days into using the M2M and overall I am very impressed with the thing.

    The good:
    • Its a heavy unit that appears to be very well made.
    • Easy to set up out of the box.
    • Its much quieter than the Sunbeam it replaced.
    • Grinds are noticeably fluffier with minimal clumping compared to the Sunbeam.
    • Dialling in to obtain an acceptable level of espresso has been very quick. Fin tuning shouldn’t take too long either.
    • Minimal to no grind retention.
    • PF holder at lowest setting can accommodate portafilter with dosing collar fitted.

    The not so good:
    • power cable socket has a bit of play and a bit of movement could cause the socket to dislodge.
    • A few beans end up sitting on the sliding hopper door (I single dose).
    • there’s a bit of popcorning.
    • plastic catch tray feels a bit cheap. A rubber tray would have been nicer.

I'll let you know my impressions after I've dialled in and used the grinder for a bit Joben.

Have to agree with Caffeinator, I have played around with a M2M and M4D both are well made but they do produce clumpy grinds. I would buy any Eureka over a Macap M2 them, even the most basic Mignon.

Out of the box, severe clumping to the point of near extrusion and with the new direction for Macap, you'd expect that most/all of the range will be replaced. The Eureka Mignon Manuale has passed it by IMHO.

It will be interesting to see what Macap have to show at HOST.

Thanks Barry, I’ll have to try a few different search terms. I admit I’ve only used the obvious ones. Good to hear that you give it a thumbs up.

There's plenty of info here on the M2M....just doesn't come up easily on standard search terms. Very good value for money grinder, particularly if speed is not a major consideration. I need to replace a capacitor in mine, but I'll do it one day.

Thanks for the reply Kjarsheim. I appreciate your thoughts on the grinder. I’ve decided to pull the pin on one and hopefully I’ll enjoy it as much as you have.

Given how Macap seem to be held in high esteem, I’m surprised here’s very little information and reviews about this particular grinder. I guess it’s positioned at an awkward price point where those who are new to the coffee game find the cost of the grinder too high and opt for a cheaper unit from an appliance brand, only to go further upscale to a much more expensive unit once the bug and upgraditis hit.

Hi, still got mine after about 3 years now and even though a Niche Zero has taken over, I'm not parting with it. They're very solidly made, essentially a small commercial unit.
Grind quality is pretty darn good and I single dosed mine from its arrival...not without a few challenges but totally do-able.
Retention isn't severe and running it on after beans are ground expels most of it.
I really like that its a whole lot tidier than the Mignon, static's minimal in my experience.
I'm presently dipping my toes into pourover and its doing ok with that too. In fact Macap state that the burrs are suitable for espresso and brewing. Maybe not optimal but doing ok so far.If its brewing, the stepped model would be just fine, bear in mind that switching between brew modes is not something you will enjoy with the micrometric version....but for purely espresso, get the micrometric.
And seriously, unless its been abused, a decent used unit will probably outlast your taste buds, lol!!!

    Thoughts on Macap M2M

    Evening all,

I’m considering a Macap M2M (stepless model) to replace my now broken Sunbeam EM0480, but I’m struggling to find any recent reviews of the current M2M. Majority of reviewers and comments are on the older stepped model.

The grinder will be used for 1 or 2 coffees per day. I single dose and am not particularly concerned with noise volume, but would welcome low mess.

Does anyone have any thoughts, both good and bad, on the M2M?

I’m conscious that the general consensus when buying grinders is to buy the best you can afford, and as such I’ve considered both a Mignon Silenzio and Mignon Specialita. I’m struggling to justify the additional expenditure over the M2M given how I intend to use the grinder

    Cheers!
