I almost added "or BNZ seconds hand that come up from time to time" but I've seen 2 prior to this in all my years here and didn't expect one so soon! These things are absolute tanks.

Oh I've not discounted it yet. I think there is a 2014 one on sale now, just that I cant see it personally due to the distance! Tbh I'm looking at the Jx800, Rocky, Breville Smart pro (trynna find a used one) or more. I saw the Jx800 while it seems to work well, the sound it makes sounds very high pitched? Could just be the video though. My preference is probably price (~up to 250 i guess), location (melb,) noise (not sound like bloody murder in the morning), and form factor (a chute-like thing that can dispense into my container as opposed to the Baratza Encore) tompoland

Hard evidence ... not really. But for the budget there are not too many other credible options. In terms of evidence, I upgraded from a sunbeam grinder to a Breville Smart Pro many years ago and noticed a dramatic difference in the cup. I then replaced my sons sunbeams with the Brevilles and they were delighted with the difference. To be fair though we are talking about espresso, not brew. Although I imagine that for the price, it would be one of the better options. Should add I have no experience with the Rocky but discounted it from consideration because I read Adaf (or misread!) to say it was not in consideration.

The old Gino Rossi or Boema (rebranded) grinders come up for sale now and again. They are built like a tank, easy to maintain, and burrs are inexpensive.
You can also sieve out the fines for cold brew, like a friend of mine does, or just do a 2hr immersion brew using lightly roasted coffee and straining through a paper or cloth filter.
Many different techniques around.
The old grinders are workhorses built to last and are very good value at the moment.

Geez, I am not so sure I'd agree with that. Any hard evidence in the cup or just speculation? FWIW, I'd avoid the smart grinder for pretty much anything to do with coffee. It's marginal at best and it breaks.
Blind tasting of a Rocky with fresh burrs and top burr carrier plumbers taped to take up the free play v Breville anyone?
One of them will still be grinding in 10 years. The other will long since have gone to landfill or (hopefully) e-waste.

I’d avoid something like a Rocky. Dedicated espresso grinders tend to do an average job when grinding course for cold brew. A Breville Smart Grinder Pro would do a pretty good job, or one of the Baratza grinders. The Climax could be worth considering as well although it’s a big beast for a kitchen bench.

Recommendations on grinder for cold brew?
Hi, I'm new to the sub, and l enjoy the helpful discussions and reviews of products in this beautiful world of coffee making. Apologies if I posted in the wrong sub or broke any rules. I've been experimenting on brewing cold brew in 2L batches with 125-140g pre-ground coffee. However, I'm thinking of buying the whole bean and grinding them myself. Handgrinder is probably out of the question at this stage, and I'm looking for a well built and good looking grinder where the chute can fit my tupperware (lol). Budget 200aud.
A few people are selling their Rancilio Rocky, but they are probably too far or aged (2005 in one!!) for my liking. I've also seem someone doing a review on Aldi/Kogan grinder, which is very cool. However the containers builds up static and I'll prolly have to fuss over washing them, which is not ideal. If anyone has any suggestiowhich new grinders suit my needs or if I should look out for the rocky used?
