  • Eureka Mignon sealed hopper options.

Hi all. I've recently upgraded from a smart grinder to the eureka Mignon specialita.

While I really like the step up, one thing that the breville had was a tinted hopper that sealed air tight.

My grinder sits in front of a window so the clear hopper and lack of seal is affecting the beans. I have always filled the hopper on the breville and never noticed a major change in the days it took to empty it. With the eureka I'm having to go just a bit finer on the grind daily.

A dark hopper is available from eureka but still not a sealing unit and not cheap at $100+

The obvious solution is to single dose, however this also has the side effect of opening and closing the bag of beans much more regularly.

So, are there any options out there beside single dose hoppers, that suit the eureka mignon range, that have lids that seal?

Or, those that have single dose hoppers, do you also have a bellows type attachment and if so, do they work? A quick google shows plenty of options for single dose hoppers.

I'm not aware of a hopper for any grinder that seals, other than the Breville. All hoppers are open at the bottom and through the grinder anyway. Given the flat and square design of the hopper it shouldn't be too big a deal to tint it yourself if you wanted to save money.

If you want to test whether it is the tint or the seal that's helping your beans, you could try sticking some cardboard on with bluetac. I suspect it is a combination of the light and heat from the sun that's doing it.

Hi, There is a solution, just fill your hopper with enough coffee for the day, thats what I do on my Specialita. You cannot really have a sealing hopper anyway if you think about it.
Buy an Airscape coffee bin storage container for your coffee, which I have. I know how many coffees I make most days so just put in the amount into the hopper.
Just place a small cloth over the hopper or spray with a Matt Black paint or apply some window tint from any autoshop.

Could also maybe try some of that latex spray paint (Plastic-dip)that is used for such things as alloy wheels. If done correctly it can be peeled off like a big condom if you change your mind or it looks like…… umm garbage

One likely culprit is sunlight heating the beans and causing them to outgas: decreased CO2 reduces the viscosity of the pour so you have to grind finer.

Half mirror (AKA one way) film is easily available and will reflect much of the sunlight, with the flat planes of the Eureka hopper you should be able to get it nice and straight.

I’d much prefer to single dose than leave the beans in the hopper, you’re better off opening the bag each time for your beans, or invest in an air scape container as that has a 1-way valve that releases the co2. This will keep your beans a lot fresher than in the hopper

I thought the Airscape valve was either open or closed? Open with the handle up to move the insert up or down, then closed with the handle folded for storage.

I believe the design of it, when the handle is pushed down still acts as a 1-way so that co2 can escape but can’t get air in. I might have to do a bit more research, but that’s the impression I was under from owning 2 of them for the last 3-4yrs

You could also try "VHT Nightshade" spray on window tint, just do a google search. You can spray it on plastic taillights which is what people do to tint them, not that I am encouraging you to do this.

Spray it on the outside of the hopper...

For a sake of test wrap hopper with kitchen foil.

So as a temporary measure to see if light and air are the culprits...

There is a rubber band between the lid and hopper and a towel over it.. Haha, and no, I don't use that tamper. I have a pullman nexus.

Early signs are promising. Fresh beans in this morning and the pour was back how it should be. I had resisted the urge to change the grind setting the last few days just to add weight to the experiment. So straight away it tells me the grinder is fine and the beans are aging quicker in this hopper than with the breville.

2nd coffee before going to work a few hours later and virtually identical pour.

To answer some comments from earlier..
Yes, I could just single dose, but for years I've been able to fill the hopper, which lasts 3-4 days, and have very little change during that time. Not enough to warrant changing grind size anyway. I only drink milk drinks so much more forgiving as well.

The bag my coffee comes in is resealable with a valve fitted. I realise there are rules around mentioning companies but they are from a well known Brisbane based roaster.

I had thought about painting it but not sure how well that would turn out.
My wife saw what I was doing and when I explained she rolled her eyes and said, just buy the black hopper.

You thought it was the same colour or put the same pressure? I have both and the round is definitely more consistent when less than full. It is made in clear and tinted versions. Call your favourite vendor or Service Sphere is the importer. AB sell them - https://alternativebrewing.com.au/pr...0g-bean-hopper

I thought the tinted hopper was the same, as in, square not round.
The one you have linked to isn't suited to the mignon range.

You are probably right as a Mignon owner, but when listed on service sphere site as 300gr Eureka hopper they say it fits 'all Eureka grinders'. Probably a mistype by them. I just couldn't link to their site.

              Quote from above

I am now certain I drink too much coffee as there is no way my Specialita Hopper will last that long.
Oh well I still kicking after all these years so I wont mess with something that obviously is not doing me any harm.
This is the same theory I have worked with when I sit down on a Friday night with a wine or two, Tito's Vodka on a Saturday Night, Estrella on .........!

To clarify, I was referring to the breville which has a larger hopper than the eureka.

another option is to line the inside of the hoper with a foil: it's easy to mould and keeps light out.

the problem with this solution is not being able to easily see when beans are running low...

Once the images are uploaded and listed in the attachments section at the bottom, there should be "small, medium, large" links next to each image. Place the cursor in the text where you want the image then click the corresponding size you want it to be.

To see bean’s level, you make/cut a vertical narrow window, similar to an electric kettle: keeps light out and doesn’t hide a pretty grinder . Or just lift the lid to check the level.

Perhaps you could remove the hopper, run a thin piece of masking tape vertically on the front, spray with plasti dip paint and then remove the masking tape before it sets.

I use bean cellar set to store the beans in each container so there's no need to open and close the bag every time I wanna make a shot.

Apologies for lack of responses. Even though I have the option selected, I don't get email notifications of the replies. Not sure why. I've been on holidays for the last 3 weeks too, so spend very little time looking at screens.

I can report that using a measuring scoop that roughly equates to the right volume of beans and just single dosing has been working out fine. A bit of popcorning at the end but nothing that seems to be affecting the taste, which is the main thing for me. Haven't noticed any degradation in the freshness of the beans from opening the bag more often either. I think I'll just continue this way as its the cheapest option for now, and coming off holidays, I'm skint.

You can slide the bottom of the hopper closed to minimise the effect of the pop-corning.
I had to thin down the edge of the slide to make the action smoother.
              Working...
