  • Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly

    Hi all;

I took the plunge from long black drinking to espresso style.
Now waiting for my brand new super jolly to arrive, pairing it with brand new silvia which yet to arrive as well ;D

The question is what to do with breville bar aroma grinder? My initial thought is keeping it for plunger and vac pots?

Good setup rudy. Regarding the breville grinder - its for the herbs and spices. I wouldnt even use it for plunger or vac pot unless I was desperate.

Thanks yeeza, how easy is it to use SJ for bulk grinding?

I admit SJ is a bit of impulsive buying :

Depends how much bulk youre talking about but its fine, with the low forks you can easily get a bowl/bag under it and thwack away.

p.s. Good impulse buy I think it was more fate though with what you had before.

          Cheers to impulse buying.

The bulk is more like 1/2 kilo for friends/relatives with no grinder.
          Should be ok.

I cant wait for that thing to arrive

Not sure about the Super Jolly, but on the side of my mazzer mini it says 50seconds on/50 seconds off.
I think the SJ can grind about 150g a minute so you wouldnt be able to grind 500g in one go.

Yeah good point. The SJ is way faster at grinding than the Mini, but even still could be wise to take your time..... actually it probably doesnt make a difference as theyre gonna drink it sub-standard unless they plan to drink all the 500g in the next couple of minutes ;D Are you getting a timed grinder or is it just on/off?

                Hmmm,

That seems a bit average when you consider that a lot of commercial dosers hold up to 500g or more of ground coffee. With Auto grinders going from scratch they will certainly run longer than this to fill up the Doser Chamber. When I grind coffee for friends or relos with the LSM, the motor runs as long as it takes to grind through 250-500g of coffee and it does this without even getting the slightest bit warm. Perhaps the duty cycle specs for commercial grinders are quite conservative.... :-?

                Mal.

So checked out the Mazzer site and they reckon 150-220g a minute. The doser is 280g. I don;t know how long the timer on mine runs for, Ive never maxed it out and let it run....

update: So i went and cranked it right on and timed it (no beans) and it ran for a minute.

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly

Last week I used a Mini to make almost 600 coffees over a three day period.

I dont think there is a need for concern as to whether these types of grinders have the capacity to grind this amount of coffee, they do. My concern would be that the grounds will be hot!

Thanks for the information guys, best coffee forum ever 8-)

Judging from the info, I might keep the bar aroma for my other beneficiaries [smiley=evil.gif]

Yeah I guess it doesnt really matter, I use mine like an "ON/OFF" switch most of the time anyway. I guess youll know about it if its overflowing ;D

Jusr curious though, would good grinder make a difference in vacpot or plunger as I thought it only makes difference in espresso machines?

                              Yes it would.

A good grinder is about uniformity of particle size.

If all the grounds are the same size the flavour extracts evenly.
