Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
Well, Ive completed several comparos with a Rocky and my current LSM at Drip, Plunger, Moka Pot and Espresso brewing methods and without doubt, you can definitely taste a significant improvement in the quality of the cup. I think this topic has arisen several times over the years with similar outcomes being noted. The quality of the grinder affects the quality in the cup regardless of the brewing method used....

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
I drink plunger at my parents with an old hand grinder. Its quite drinkable but leaves a lot more sediment than with the mini.

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
Thanks for replies people. I have been using Bar Aroma for awhile, on vac pot, plunger and aeropress. Bar Aroma is a burr grinder, and so far this is the best grinder I have until the SJ.
For lack of comparison, I was happily drinking coffee from all three methods.
I still have to wait for SJ to arrive, then Ill do blind test on wife :

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
I didnt take it as having a go Dennis.
You just have to remember my style - succint.
Sometimes it comes across as vague or lacking in detail.
I think I answered the question...definitively.
I think you answered a different one.
To get back on topic - sell the Breville.

Uniformity of particles is important, though probably more so for espresso [since the extraction is fast & pressurised], but the bigger difference grinders make in cupping and plungers is down to the fines [or lack thereof].
Lesser grinders and those with some "play" in their adjustment produce fines [dust]. This dust will make your plunger cloudy muddy and more bitter..................
I reckon this is one of the key differentiators between the Aeropress and a French Press: ie the Aeropres is much less fussy about grind.
Anyway, you now have an SJ and a Breville: try it out and let us know what you think.
Gee reubster, how did cupping and the AeroPress get extrapolated from a question about vacpots and plunger?
a) I was referring to grinders, not spice helicopters, and lesser grinders really arent much better. Though I do know that lots of people do enjoy those suspended particles from a plunger,
b) I have totally the opposite view in regard to the AeroPress - the better the grind quality the better the result,
c) TG, I wasnt having a go at you, but I read "yes it would" as a fairly definitive statement.
Anyway, sorry to take it off topic. Like reubster said, try it for yourself and let us know.

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
Thanks for defending me reubster.
Dennis I know you werent disagreeing with me but I just want to point out I didnt say "critical" just that it would make a difference.
The next question would obviously be "how much of a difference?".
You were just one step ahead of me.

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
While I agree with TG in the main, I dont believe that grind uniformity is anywhere near as critical when using a plunger. After all, using a plunger soaks the grinds. I wouldnt think theres too much extraction going on there.

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
Yes it would.
A good grinder is about uniformity of particle size.
If all the grounds are the same size the flavour extracts evenly.

Jusr curious though, would good grinder make a difference in vacpot or plunger as I thought it only makes difference in espresso machines?

Thanks for the information guys, best coffee forum ever 8-)
Judging from the info, I might keep the bar aroma for my other beneficiaries [smiley=evil.gif]
Not sure, to be honest I didnt even check the spec, it is just impulsive :POriginally posted by YeeZa link=1217290298/0#6 date=1217320333Are you getting a timed grinder or is it just on/off?

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
Firstly,Originally posted by cuppacoffee link=1217290298/0#9 date=1217371263Last week I used a Mini to make almost 600 coffees over a three day period.
I dont think there is a need for concern as to whether these types of grinders have the capacity to grind this amount of coffee, they do. My concern would be that the grounds will be hot!
Go the mini!
And secondly, I agree.

Re: Upgraded from Breville to Super Jolly
So checked out the Mazzer site and they reckon 150-220g a minute. The doser is 280g. I don;t know how long the timer on mine runs for, Ive never maxed it out and let it run....
update: So i went and cranked it right on and timed it (no beans) and it ran for a minute.
