Thanks, I'll give this a try. I sometimes use vinegar to clean the bottom bit of the moka pot, and it works pretty well without leaving any discernible residue.

My other hobby has to do with knives. (I'm talking here high end custom, not stuff out of the supermarket or junk knives). Anyway, you won't find custom makers making ceramic knives. Various steels are what is used.
OK, a bit off topic, just pointing out where I'm coming from. I don't know if the ceramics in grinders are the same as ceramic knives but, if similar, they can be cleaned with vinegar or rub them with lemon and leave for quite some time then clean with baking soda. I don't know if this will work in your situation but maybe, before you throw the thing out, give it a try.

Yes, I was tending towards this conclusion. C2 = purchased.Originally posted by LeroyC View PostI wouldn’t bother. These lightweight hand grinders with ceramic burrs are pretty rubbish really. Hand grinders with steel conical burrs are so cheap now that I’d be saving the time and money you’ll waste trying to clean and crappy ceramic burr hand grinder and put it towards something like a Precision Hand Grinder or Timemore C2.

Would also love to know , as I own a rhino hand grinder, the ceramic burrs basically are stained from coffee grinds. Have only scrubbed mine with brushes, but added no liquid, but unsure if soaking or putting water on them would be ideal as they are burrs. Considering sitting them in a cafetto bath if it’s suitable for them to be in there

Cleaning hand burr grinder
I've been using a Rhino hand grinder since June, and was getting pretty good results (with a moka pot). But then about a month ago, things really went downhill - a persistent sour after taste. It took me quite a while to trace the problem back to the grinder, which admittedly I had barely cleaned. However, even after a few really good cleans, soaking in warm water, scrubbing with toothbrush etc, there is still more than hint of sourness. This doesn't arise when I use my crappy old electric grinder, but it does arise after hand grinding, no matter what brew method I use.
So: help! What can I do to really properly clean the burr bits of the grinder?
