For purely filter the Ode with SSP is the best grinder under $3k IMO
*best value I meant. Anything capable of taking 64mm SSP burrs is going to be pretty equal in terms of grind quality, it's just a matter of workflow and convenience. The P64 is probably nicer to use than the Ode, but at 3x the price of the Ode, it's not 3x as good. The Ode's biggest drawback is the ~1g held in the chute by static that you can knock out after 10-20s, or comes out by itself 10min later.

There's also the SSP cast burrs (80mm Lab Sweet copy) that are going to be available very soon, so another possible option in the 64mm platform. Option-O are also making their own version of these, but are unlikely to sell them without a P64 / to existing owners.

The Niche is, at very best, acceptable for filter brewing. The DF64 with SSP is no advantage over the Ode for filter brewing. The Ode actually has a better workflow. For purely filter the Ode with SSP is the best grinder under $3k IMO

I think the portability/footprint of the mini is real benefit to it, while still being a great grinder for filter to espresso.

From what I have heard the DF64 does a better job for espresso than the Niche, but the Niche certainly has the edge for workflow.

Would your advice change if the budget extended to say $1k? Would the Ode (or the Lagom mini, although availability seems to be an issue) still be the recommendation for grinder just for pourover / aeropress? Or would something like the Niche or DF64 be a better option?

    Thanks in advance!

giffsa With the stock V1 burrs yes. The V1.1 burrs apparently are similar to V1 but at the same settings the V1.1 grinds a certain amount finer (can't remember how much) specifically to combat this. Every unit new, since late last year sometime (?) should come with V1.1. I have a unit that came with V1 burrs, but I put SSP burrs almost straight away because I had them.

The V2 burrs that are currently in the works are, apparently by early beta testing reports, a decent step up from the V1.1, to the point where it's probably not worth the money to upgrade to SSPs (though they are still a bit of an upgrade). V2 burrs have not yet entered production, so it'll be a number of months before we see new Odes with them here and old stock is flushed out etc even if they give production the go ahead tomorrow.

Fellow Ode burrs are relatively cheap (like $70?) so if you got a unit with V1.1 it wouldn't be a huge expense to upgrade them to V2 if you wanted to later.

level3ninja I've read a fair bit suggesting the grind range on the Ode is pretty limited and may not grind fine enough for light roasts intended for aeropress brewing (short of investing another couple of hundred on an alernative burr set). Any experience with this?

Thanks all - sorry, I should have been clearer that I'm not looking for a travel grinder, this is now for use at home with aeropress/pour-overs etc. So portability not a consideration, and looking for a powered grinder not hand grinder.

Ode was on my radar, wasn't aware of the Option O mini; will take a look! Thanks!

Depending on how you travel and if weight is a factor, a used Fellow Ode should fit your budget. They're relatively compact but weigh 4.5kg, if it's going in the boot it's not a big deal but as carry-on it might be a different story. Very easy and enjoyable to use.

There's two versions, 38mm for filter only and 48mm for filter and espresso (I have the 48mm). 38mm approx AU$500, 48mm approx AU$600 to your door (the prices on their website are in USD and don't include the US$35 shipping). If you're not grinding at espresso settings the power supply is a non-issue for current versions. The next release will have an updated power supply that solves the issue with espresso grinding (I have a temporary power supply they reimbursed me for and it has solved all issues). I also bought a AU$35 Nintendo Switch travel case and reused the packing foam from the box it came in to make a travel case. I have really been enjoying filter from it, but to be fair coming from doing filter on a Niche that should be the case.

1Zpresso KMAX if you can find it here, pleasure to use, smooth, easy and quick.
I brew Aeropress, V60 and Clever dripper, had some brews that made me look sideways at my P64 with V1 brew burrs.

level3ninja has the option o mini in a nice little travel case - bit higher than your budget in aud but mighty tempting if they fix the power supply issue.

    Advice - grinders for filter/aeropress

Hi CSers - looking for some purchasing advice. I've got a good home espresso setup with a pretty serious grinder, but looking to add a second grinder to the mix solely to use for aeropress and some pourovers. Have just been using an old spice grinder for aeropress and largely when travelling, but keen to make it more of a regular option at home and need to up the grind quality, and have something I can set and forget in terms of fineness (ie. don't want to be using the same grinder I use for espresso).

Don't want to spend a tonne, so looking for advice on a good option for $200-400; new or used not fussed. What would people recommend for this purpose? Thanks!
