We had a blackout recently overnight that may have had an associated power surge. Anyway, when I got up the next morning, my prized and much-loved Eureka Mignon Specialita seemed to be on the fritz -- specifically, it was showing randomised time settings for the one and two cup timed dose buttons (1.5s and 1.3s respectively), and the "-" and "+" adjustment buttons on the touch display weren't lit up at all, so there seemed to be no way to adjust the corrupted time settings back to something useful.
I was thinking grimly that the power surge had fried my Specialita, but in extremis, I decided actually Reading The Fine Manual that came with machine might be worth a desperate shot.
Lo and behold, I discovered the machine was not damaged after all, merely confused, and had been flipped into a random mode by the power surge. In particular, it had found itself in "locked" mode, which accounts for the adjustment buttons not being lit, and simple pressing both the "-" and "+" together for 5s or so unlocked the display, allowed me to make the adjustments back to my former timed dose settings, and all was well again with the world.
There's probably a moral in there somewhere, but in any case, I went out and bought an $18 surge protected power board for the coffee gear.
Just though I'd post this in case anyone stumbles into a case of analogous weirdness.
