  • Manual Grinder for starting my pour-over journey

Hoping to get some advise for a new grinder purchase
I’m keen to get into pour over but think I will need to upgrade my current grinder which is a Baratza Sette 270 as not sure these are great for pour overs. Been reasonably happy with it for my espresso based milk drinks but always get upgraditis.

I haven’t been able to convince the wife to allow me to upgrade to something that will be good for both (NZ,DF64, P64) so wondering if I go to a high end Manual Grinder such as 1Zpresso, Commandante or Kinu while I start my journey with pourover as a stop gap.

Will I get a good result in the cup for pourover?
Could this conceivably be an upgrade on the Baratza for my Espresso based drinks?
Or maybe I persist with nagging, save the money I would spend on a manual grinder and wait to try and get the upgrade.

    Thanks
    J

It might be bigger than you are after but...
There is a HG-1 for sale for a stupid cheap price at the moment.
This grinder matches most top end grinders that sell for 4 times the price.

Probably a bit more than I was thinking but thanks for the suggestion!

I’m really happy with my 1Zpresso K Plus. Clarity is great and even aftet spending that much on a manual grinder I feel happy enough not to purchase an electric grinder. The build is great and dialing is not that hard at all. The grinding itself for pourover or coarser setting is a breeze

Thanks that is great to hear you are happy enough with it compared to purchasing an electric grinder!

It changed my perception of manual grinding so much that I feel like I want to get another like C40 so I can run same beans on both and just have fun with it

1zpresso k plus is what i use also and absolutely love it, Easy to grind for pour over or cold drip. I also tried it for an espresso, but it does get harder to grind.
I bought it as a stop gap till my lagom p100 arrives, but not sure id want to get rid of it now as i love it so much

Thanks, I was thinking of using it also if I get into manual lever espresso making. Is it too difficult you think to grind for espresso daily? I am young and healthy (at this stage) so don't mind putting in a little bit of hard work

If a 1zpresso K Pro looks good but too much money, buy a Kingrinder K6, 95% the same thing but with 15um steps instead of 22um on the K series, and about $100 cheaper.

        Yep.
I have one and I love it.
It is my travelling/power failure back up.
Also it is set up from the factory to function with a cordless drill.

And, the KinGrinder has the adjusting ring on the outside of the body.

Another upvote for 1zpresso. I have the JX version and it works beautifully and fully recommend it.

I bought the 1zpresso jx-pro for pour-over and plunger coffee and highly recommend it. Very easy to dial in and easy to grind for these coffee styles. I got the jx pro so that notionally I could do espresso with it but I've never gotten around to trying. The adjustment settings are quite fine but I think it'd be a bit slow grinding for espresso.

I also just picked up a JX pro. Initial impressions are good, it breezes through medium roast coffee at pour over range, and pretty easy with light roast too. Not too bad at espresso range for the medium roast, but I tried doing some filter roasted Ethiopian coffee at espresso settings and that was a workout on its own!
