  • Malkhonig Vario died - repair diagnosis or options?

Sadly my Vario, which has worked faultlessly for over 10 years, had a major meltdown yesterday, and I'm wondering if anyone can help (other posts here suggest there are a few people who know quite a bit about these.

While I was grinding beans, both the course and fine adjustment levers suddenly moved to the bottom of their range, and the noise changed from the regular grinding noise to a high pitched one. The grinding stopped, but it sounded like the motor was still going, like something was spinning fast. I switched it off a few seconds later, and the machine smelled like something had gotten hot (but not burning). Does this sound like any failure you've heard of before?

Finally - are there any repairers in Melbourne you'd suggest for this grinder?

The levers interface with an adjustment mechanism which is held in place with a small allen head machine screw.

That's the first place I'd look.

Hi Lyrebird and thanks for your reply. Do you know of a video or schematic that shows the mechanism you're talking about please?

So the part I mentioned is the screw that fits into parts 30 and 31, shown below those parts (but not labelled) in those diagrams.

Thanks folks, that's very helpful, and I should be able to find the part Lyrebird suspects now.

There's lots of videos about adjusting, fixing or upgrading these grinders, but I haven't been able to find any reference to this mode of failure, so hopefully it's fixable.

Look for videos also for Baratza Vario as certain versions were the same parts wise.

Thanks roosterben. I've seen the Baratza videos, and they will be great instructions for pulling it apart when I have time, and hopefully also find out what's gone wrong once it's apart.

BSOD keep us posted once you get it open! I have a Mahlkonig Vario myself so am intrigued to hear - though haven't had any major issues myself. If it sounded like the motor was still going but the burrs had stopped, then probably check the drive belt as this may be slipping??
