  • How long does your grinder take to grind your single dose shot?

I have a Eureka Mignon Silenzio and it has served me well. I normally weigh about 18g and single dose the grinder. I use the timer function but mostly only get 15g out from the max time setting. Not a big deal but I have to push the button twice. I will time the max setting and see how long it goes for when I get home.

I have toyed with upgrading the grinder after reading about the potential effects of heat etc. with extended grinding times or am I just being ridiculous? Also, would prefer a quiet grinder to not upset the household so not sure upgrading to a really fast grinder would make sense from a sound perspective...

In answer to the question in the title: the EG-1 takes 35 seconds for 18 grams set to 500RPM. That's a flat burr so it takes longer than the conical burrs in the Malwani Livi benchtop handgrinder that takes a suprisingly shot 15 seconds going as fast as my skinny but lanky arms can spin.

Judging by its name (Silenzio) you may already have one of the quieter grinders around. The Niche is relatively quiet. The Honne is definitely not quiet. Was there any particular grinder you had in mind?

But upgrading is just flat out interesting and fun. So yeah, do it.

You have got the Upgraditis Itch and it never goes away so start scratching and enjoy the soothing relief. For a while.

Interesting - I have just switched to a silenzio.

20g of beans grinds in 20 seconds, and I have the timer knob in the 9 o’clock position, so I still have a few seconds up my sleeve.

Are your burrs worn? I put a new set in my Mazzer Mini and was pleasantly surprised by how much quicker it is now.

I was looking at the niche as an option and yes, maybe I am just looking for an excuse... I will time it this weekend and see if the time is excessive.

The grinder is about 4 years old but I have spent a lot of time working away and mostly used it for 2-3 coffees a day on the weekend. Could be worn. When I last checked, they looked pretty good but I have heard of people saying that the burrs looked fine but were better after replacement

Why not set the grinder to grind half a dose at a time with a quicker timer setting?

            Mal.

Was hoping to just let the timer time out but that stops before, i just push the button and it goes again because I weigh and put the right amount of beans in the hopper I was hoping it would just do the whole amount. First world problems I know!

My Eureka XL takes about 9 seconds to grind 22 grams of med/dark.

Based on my current beans (medium/dark) and grind setting, I'm doing 18g in 7.2 seconds on my XL.

Interestingly enough, it's pretty consistent time based. I usually just weigh-in the first grind in the morning and don't check it again.

Very quiet, well in comparison to my previous 'Combi' machine. No complaints thus far.

P100 at maximum speed takes about 3 seconds. Lagom Mini takes about a minute.

3 Seconds! Wow, that is intense. Is it loud though?

Rawmsy it's definately not quiet, but it's quieter than some other 98mm grinders

It’s also very very loud. It’s one of the noisiest grinders I’ve owned in the past and one of the louder ones in the market I believe. So if you want speed then sure, but if you like the sound of your Mignon, I wouldn’t even bother

Well I could check ....but Im not time poor that It occurs to me its necessary.
Whats important is that its easy to dial in, consistent / repetitive once set. Tick....
That I can mark up different settings for different baskets / flow rates etc and it is as said consistent. Tick......
What more do you want ?

I guess I want to get a feel for whether it’s too slow, as in it’s a grinder trait, my burrs are worn (even though they look fine) or something like that. The timer times out on max setting and I have to press it again while I am doing other prep. 1st world problems I know!!

There may be an element of upgradeitis I’m not gonna lie

Speed is just a function of grinder burr size, bigger = faster and to a lesser extent geometry.

Have you pulled your grinder down and cleaned the grinder chamber and chute?

Probably a valid point. It is probably due.

I didn't finish my thought as I think I'd it is very slow it is more likely clogged or has coffee oils internally.

Blunt burrs would grind about the same speed just with poor grind distribution and you would find very hard to dial in and run longer shots.

I could be way wrong here, and don't mind being shown to be. Yes, grinding causes friction and friction produces heat.

But I'd imagine the concern for heat would be apply more in a cafe which doesn't grind to order, where they grind away for several minutes non-stop until the doser is full, and the burrs are getting hotter and hotter, and spreading that heat to the grinds, which then sit for maybe hours until fully used up.

For the home, where you grind only for seconds, with a small interval maybe between shots , and you brew the grinds straight away... would there really be enough heat generated?

I have to agree with your reasoning here. A single dose at a time probably won’t make much in the way of heat. Good observation

If looking for a faster grinder then work backwards. How fast do you need the coffee ground and why?
consider distribution, grinder and grounds quality and budget
              make decision and enjoy

I have a grinder that is reasonably fast ( not P100 fast though), but my workflow makes that only part of the equation. Do you hold your portafilter as you grind? After quality of grinds, I would put lack of messiness in my priority order and although I would prefer quieter grinders , I don't want a manual grinder. I can set timed dose , but I prefer 2 button pushes - so i can tend to the puck/distribution. I haven't used a Silencio but have heard lots of good reports. I would strongly suggest seeing if you can test or taste from possible upgrade machine. good luck
