How long does your grinder take to grind your single dose shot?

I have just replaced the 64mm flat burrs in my old La Cimbali Junior and it now takes a 7 count where before it was 10 to 11 count. I suppose this is usual with new burrs?

It’s also very very loud. It’s one of the noisiest grinders I’ve owned in the past and one of the louder ones in the market I believe. So if you want speed then sure, but if you like the sound of your Mignon, I wouldn’t even bother

I have a grinder that is reasonably fast ( not P100 fast though), but my workflow makes that only part of the equation. Do you hold your portafilter as you grind? After quality of grinds, I would put lack of messiness in my priority order and although I would prefer quieter grinders , I don't want a manual grinder. I can set timed dose , but I prefer 2 button pushes - so i can tend to the puck/distribution. I haven't used a Silencio but have heard lots of good reports. I would strongly suggest seeing if you can test or taste from possible upgrade machine. good luck

If looking for a faster grinder then work backwards. How fast do you need the coffee ground and why?
consider distribution, grinder and grounds quality and budget
make decision and enjoy

Based on my current beans (medium/dark) and grind setting, I'm doing 18g in 7.2 seconds on my XL.
Interestingly enough, it's pretty consistent time based. I usually just weigh-in the first grind in the morning and don't check it again.
Very quiet, well in comparison to my previous 'Combi' machine. No complaints thus far.

Rawmsy it's definately not quiet, but it's quieter than some other 98mm grinders

I could be way wrong here, and don't mind being shown to be. Yes, grinding causes friction and friction produces heat.
But I'd imagine the concern for heat would be apply more in a cafe which doesn't grind to order, where they grind away for several minutes non-stop until the doser is full, and the burrs are getting hotter and hotter, and spreading that heat to the grinds, which then sit for maybe hours until fully used up.
For the home, where you grind only for seconds, with a small interval maybe between shots , and you brew the grinds straight away... would there really be enough heat generated?

I didn't finish my thought as I think I'd it is very slow it is more likely clogged or has coffee oils internally.
Blunt burrs would grind about the same speed just with poor grind distribution and you would find very hard to dial in and run longer shots.

Speed is just a function of grinder burr size, bigger = faster and to a lesser extent geometry.
Have you pulled your grinder down and cleaned the grinder chamber and chute?

I guess I want to get a feel for whether it’s too slow, as in it’s a grinder trait, my burrs are worn (even though they look fine) or something like that. The timer times out on max setting and I have to press it again while I am doing other prep. 1st world problems I know!!
There may be an element of upgradeitis I’m not gonna lie

Well I could check ....but Im not time poor that It occurs to me its necessary.
Whats important is that its easy to dial in, consistent / repetitive once set. Tick....
That I can mark up different settings for different baskets / flow rates etc and it is as said consistent. Tick......
What more do you want ?
