  • Grinder dilemma...

I am looking at up grading grinder set up early next year and am toying with a combination of the Weber Key (for conical) and a P64 for playing with flat burrs.

I am also trying to work our whether I would be better to go all out and just go for the EG-1 (their Base burrs have similar profile to conical).

Going the option 1 route I have change left over from the price of just the EG-1.. I could almost get the P100 + Key for the same as the EG-1.

Anyway... to get to the point I was wondering if anyone has any real life use of the Key and how it fares in terms of use and end result in the cup. Also thoughts on the above 2 options would be greatly appreciated.

The grinders will be paired (with a yet to be purchased) R9 One.

    Cheers

Hi Alistair, I have an EG-1 and a benchtop hand grinder (Malwani Livi) in which I have the same burr set as the Key (83mm Mazzer Robur conical) I've also just started testing the new Olympia Moca SD with 64mm flat burrs.

If you can let me know what style of drinks you prefer (roast depth and style of coffee e.g. espresso, milk, brew) I can share some thoughts regarding your dilemma.

Hey matey... thank you for getting back to me. In terms of roasts I tend to favour medium roasts over dark or light roasts. Drink wise a mix of milk (piccolo) and espresso.

The roasters I use do a wonderful blend that works a treat with milk and great singles for the espresso side of things.

With the new grinder(s) and machine combo I am keem to explorer other roasts and expand my flavour profile.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

      Cheers

In that case I believe that your original pick of the P64 (or other quality flat burr) and the Key would be ideal for you. The burrs in the P64 would let you happily explore the lighter side of life and brew/drip stuff.

I had a close look at the Key and spoke with Douglas Weber at MICE just two days ago. He's pretty passionate about the burr set in the Key to the point where he suggested they are big enough and open enough at the top to be considered as having a pre-breaker built into the one burr. set Anyhow, whatever the theory, I'm a big fan of the Mazzer Robur burrs because for medium espresso they bring out more origin flavours than the Kony burrs that are in the Niche Zero. I like espresso from both burrs sets but if I had to choose just the one for medium roasts the Roburs would be the winner. Dark roasts are the domain of the Kony burrs IMHO.

But I'd love to know what the likes of CleanFinish level3ninja and others who are better versed on light beans and brews/drip thingies than I am, to see if they recommend the P64 for your flat burr grinder.

Hands down though I'd recommend getting the combo of conical and flat as opposed to just an EG-1. Just my two bobs worth and more than happy for others to chip in.

Hey Hoggers where are you based? if in melbourne

I have the EG-1, Key and P100, partnered with a la marzocco GS3 AV if youd like a play.
Bring your fav beans along and go nuts.

For mine, if i was to have just 1 id most likely pick the P100

The EG-1 with the core burrs is my fav for espresso but the P100 is very close
With the ULF burrs the EG-1 is the king of pour over, but i did not like the core burrs for pour over.

The P100 though does both pour over and espresso very well

The key shine with med to dark roasts. I use it for my blends and milk based drinks

Looks like you are near Sydney which is pretty much half way beteen John and Tom. So maybe next weeked pop into John's place on Saturday and have a play date in Melbourne and then on Sunday pop up to Noosa and you can try my toys. I know it's a bit of driving over just two days but it's not like you won't have more than enough cafienne to get you there and back

I'd say the P64 is going to offer the best platform for exploration, given the width of variety of burr flavour profile available in 64mm. 64mm has enough steps along the way you'll be bound to figure out what type of profile you like best in flat burr land (Italmill > HU > CV > MPv2 > MPv1 > Brew). For 98mm, the burrs available aren't that spread out along a spectrum, they're more bunched together in 2 places (Turkish and Brew).

Burr price has to be considered too, 64mm burrs range from about $70-300, whereas the EG-1 or P100 burrs are going to be double the top end of that or more. If buying second hand you'll save money and should be able to recoup most of what you paid for them. There's also a healthy second hand market for 64mm, whereas 98mm and 80mm are much less common to see.

If you want to explore genuinely light roasts, the EG-1 needs to be fed the beans slowly and not just dumped all in or it will stall, which for the money is a bit of a joke! I personally would never pony up for one for that reason as I prefer the lighter stuff and machines that do the job they're designed for.

Have to say I've never had a stall but then again you will be using beans that are very light roasted. What RPM did you have it set to? Interested to know. I run mine at 500RPM and almost exclusively with medium or full city. I have run nodic light from tim whatshisname, but it was only a dozen or so grinds.

I haven't actually used an EG-1 but have spoken to enough people with similar roast preferences that have. Check out Brian Quan on YouTube, he has a couple of videos on the EG-1, there's a recent one comparing it to the P100.

Guys... thank you so much for the feedback and John your kind offer of a play in hugely appreciated - I live in Sydney but if I am down in your neck of the woods will let you know.

My feelings are definitely leaning towards the combo of Key and P64 as i feel I will get 2 exceptioanlly cable grinders allowing me to get the best level of experimentation.

I must admit i did also consider the e37z Hero but at almost 10k it really is getting into silly territory and not sure it would give any discernible benefit over the rest of the pack + I am sure there are very few in the wild to actually get user feed back on.

My local roaster got a new R9 One the other day so he got me to come down and help dial it in... way to many shots of espresso but it truly is an amazing machine and having only just lightly scratched the surface of what it can do can't wait to spend some decent time with one.

I must admit that part of the enjoyment about the coffee journey is the whole investigation of the gear... there is so much out there and a wealth of informationation to go.with it.

          Cheers all.
