I have been using two door stops which work well - achieving the same outcome, for a fraction of the price.

I've seen some stands that tilt the Grinder to make it more like the SD versions. I guess the idea is to minimise retention. Has anyone tried it?

The flavour profile from each vendor's burr set will play a big role here. That will have a bigger impact than moving up in burr size. Its probably cheaper to start with a home made bellows first and see if that works, there are examples on you tube. Then if you are happy you can spend the cash and purchase a bellows. For me I was always single dosing with the Specialita, and then just hitting the top and sides of the grinder to try and get the grinds out (before I got the bellows). The bellows works really well, and no sore hand!

I have a Specialita and got this SD bellows from Etsy, the seller goes by the name Fused Line. It is a bit cheaper than the Eureka bellows and works really well. I purchased an additional bellows as I reckon that will go first. The lower half is 3D printed but solid. I am very happy with the performance. I messaged them and asked a few questions, they are based in the US and were very responsive.

It’s much better than the standard hopper, you dont waste as much beans. It does slow down your workflow as you need to weigh the beans before grinding, that is the same for any SD grinder. I get very little retention, on average 0.1g. I would say this a bellows is a good investment if you want to SD rather than you buying a new SD grinder. I make between 3-5 coffees a day max.

If you buy the bellows you can always put the standard hopper back on if you want to do lots of drinks back to back, so it gives you more flexibility. With a pure SD grinder you cannot really do that.

This bellows is a bit narrower than the Eureka one so is more forcefully as the bellows has a smaller diameter. I have seen a couple of videos on you tube with people a bit unhappy with the Eureka bellows as there have been issues with the lid. Others may be able to comment if this is a real issue or not.

With this one the bellows is one piece so makes the operation easy.

I converted my Specialita to single dosing a few months ago and have generally been very happy with the result. I went with Eureka’s own solution, fitting the single dose hopper and bellows. Not the cheapest at around $170, but I liked the look more than the various Etsy solutions.

The hopper shutoff is better and feels more solid than the standard hopper and works well with the bellows. I close it during grinding to minimise popcorning. It also seems more effective when using the bellows to leave the shutoff closed.

I still wonder whether I would be even happier with a purpose-built single doser, but for now that is a what-if that I’m sure others can offer an opinion on. Happy to answer any other specific questions you have.

Not necessary IMHO. Just weigh in and grind the lot. You'll find it pretty consistent.

Thereafter if you have money to burn, by all means. Any permanent mods to OEM will likely make your current grinder less interesting to potential purchasers if you do decide to flip it.

  • Converting Eureka Specialita to single-dose vs purpose built SD grinder

    Hi all,

This forum has been a great place to learn about the differences between gear and apply them to my use cases.
However one scenario I can't really decide on is whether or not converting my Specialita (non XL) to SD is really that much worse than a purpose built SD grinder like Niche Zero or DF64.

I only drink around 2-3 coffees a day and my wife has ditched coffee recently (blasphemy!) so I have beans sitting in the hopper for a while which means they start to go stale quicker hence the reason for looking at moving to SD so I can keep beans sealed in the bag for longer.

I couldn't find many posts on converting the Specialita, so anyone that has done it could you help provide some insight on pros and cons and if anyone has tried it but ended up moving to something like a Niche/DF64 anyway.

    Cheers
Working...
