    Hi Verity,

For your situation, I'm going to disagree with the above suggestion. The easiest of workflows is going to be an on demand grinder with a bean hopper and a portafilter holder. In contrast, single dosing involves additional fussing about.

I've been there myself, with small kids running around the kitchen. Everything you said in the above quote are all excellent clues and strongly steers me away from suggesting a single dosing grinder like the Niche. Definitely go with the X54.

In your situation, load the hopper with about 2 days worth of beans. Set and forget the timer to give you your desired dose of ground coffee and away you go. Your morning coffee workflow couldn't be easier.

Niche Zero would be my pick then. The best grinder for what you are after. Relatively forgiving compared to a flat burr and great body with oodles of choc flavor from medium to dark beans with milk.

You can land them direct from the UK for AU$1,000 with full warranty. A bit pricey though unfortunately if buying through an Australian retailer. Second hand ones pop up here from time to time but they are generally a similar price to new ones.

    And the easiest of workflows.

Hi Tom, I would say Medium to Medium-Dark. He drinks milk coffees. With small children underfoot, spending loads of time making absolutely perfect coffee is currently impossible. Near enough is good enough and an easy but flexible workflow is important.

Hi Verity, What is your husband's preferred style of coffee for example roast depth perhaps medium or dark and with milk or not?

    Birthday upgrade

    Hi all,

Hubby currently has an Ascaso Mini i2 and uses it for Moka pot and Aeropress. I have a nanopresso. We both happily drink cafe coffee but would like to start exploring home espresso. I just bought a used Rancilio Silvia to play with, but seriously considering purchasing an HX machine in the near future. He is pretty wedded to manual brew methods at the moment.

Hubby has a significant birthday coming up and I’d like to get him/us a new (or preloved) grinder. The issue I have with the Ascaso is that it is so loud and pretty impossible to adjust grind size between manual brew and espresso. I like how solid and compact it is.

I’d like a grinder that could easily shift between grind sizes but open to keeping the Ascaso and having two grinders (not ideal as we have limited space).

I’m looking at Compak K3 Touch Advance, Mahlkonig x54 or Vario, maybe d54. If having two grinders then perhaps one of the Eurekas either Mignon Specialita or Atom. It might be better to switch the Ascaso to espresso as we aren’t doing too much of this and get a better, quiet grinder for Aeropress/Moka pot.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on these options, either one or two grinders, and are there any other quiet, versatile grinders I should look at?

    Thanks,

    Verity
