  • Grinder recommendations for filter only

    Hi all,

Having recently started my filter coffee journey and just purchased the Behmor Brazen Brewer plus 3.0, I'm after some recent recommendations for a grinder for filter use only. After best bang for buck, no bells and whistles needed.

Have done some preliminary searches on here and have seen suggestions such as Ode, Lagom mini and Eureka Mignon. Really need to keep it as budget tight as possible, located in Hobart, so haven't seen much available second hand locally, only sunbeam pro series.

Any suggestions or recommendations very much welcomed.

level3ninja and CleanFinish are two amongst many that have explored close to the bottom of this particular rabbit hole.

Personally, give your specs, I'd vote for the Fellow Ode.

      Thanks.

Also raises my question about the Fellow Ode v1.1 vs v2 and if the v1.1 would suffice? It's still above my intended budget, but not sure anything sub $400 would be worth it.

If you're willing to hand grind the performance per $ spent goes up exponentially. 1Zpresso ZP6 Special is the best hand grinder I've tried for filter hands down. Other notable mentions are the 1Zpresso Q2 heptagonal, KINGrinder K6.

Electric your best bet would be a second hand Ode if you can find one. The features on the V2 Ode apparently fix all the annoying things about the V1, so for me they'd be worth it.

subjective of course, but do you think a significant or meaningful improvement from K6 to ZP6 (accepting filter only)?

Blues1143 it's a definite change, whether that's an improvement to you is subjective. The K6 is like the other similar burrs, blended and sweet as a general trend. The ZP6 is closer to neutral presentation, with a slight bias to blended but only a little. It has a very wide zone of minimal harshness so when when it's not great it's not bad. Pretty much every cup I've ever made is more than drinkable.

Alright, I'm close to being sold on a manual grinder... Definitely going to get better bang for buck. Doesn't appear to be too much effort on doing the grind, but they all seem to only do up to 40g at a time. Would be doing 2 grinds for a batch brew it seems.

Can't seem to find a stockist in Australia? Did you purchase direct from overseas?

Yes direct from the manufacturer, currently with free shipping on all grinders

I agree with the ninja and you can just order directly from 1zpresso website. Mine came via DHL in 5 days.
Alternative brewing will probably eventually get them in stock but you would have to ask them.

I have the Behmor Brazen Brewer 2.0. I recently switched to the Fellow Ode V2 grinder. If you aren't doing espresso, this grinder is perfect for your needs. The grinds amazingly consistent and will do enough for a full carafe if you wish.

I would also recommend a hand grinder (1zpressos are great) - if you don't mind the additional effort. Also in Hobart, feel free to PM!

With the V1.0 I've done 18g V60 at just off chirp. I thought the V1.1 could go finer?

They also offer the V2 with SSP burrs installed, for a price. I don't know if it's worth it.

Bought the fellow ode v1 off another member and was super happy with how it performed. I found no issue with grinds for my 20g dose of filter beans - if you were doing smaller ratios then perhaps the “grind finder” issue might have been problematic.

I’d recommend it for sure and you can save up for Ssp burrs later which I did. I’ve replaced my burrs with Ssp cast burrs and love it every bit.

Thanks everyone (almost). Alternative Brewing say they may be getting stock of ZP6 in and listing online for preorders soon. Unsure what the price will be in the end, but surely cheaper than buying direct in USD?! So thinking of holding out for that, unless the K-Max gets heavily discounted before then and I can't resist.

i have the specialita and 1zpresso j-max which i alternate to use for v60

it is true what they say that specialita’s flat burrs give superior clarity but 1zpresso’s conical burrs give superior body.

it is not that much more effort to hand grind with the 1zpresso. the grinder is so well built grinding is easy-as.

if i had to recommend one for you, with a tight budget, go for the 1zpresso.

If you are looking for bang for buck, hand grinder is the way to go.

Story time: I was on the Comandante and very recently picked up an Ode with v1.1 stock burrs (~500 AUD from Alternative Brewing). I still significantly prefer the Comandante brews over the Ode. I will probably upgrade to the SSP burrs (another 330AUD) which I suspect will probably push the Ode to outperform the Comandante (based on other users' comments). I can't think of a cheaper way to get high quality flat burrs in an electric grinder right now. This is all a roundabout way of saying that to me, ~830 AUD seems like the minimum you'd have to spend to get a new electric grinder that produces comparable quality to a top end hand grinder. So if maximising quality in the cup and minimising price are your goals, and you don't mind grinding by hand... go for a hand grinder.

Bring this discussion back into light, I'm hearing the Ode without the SSP burrs is just not that great. Looking at the Ode to the HG-1 for a closer price comparison of landing one, does anyone have any insight on the HG-1 for performance in filter brews.

I donated my eureka specilita to my friend which I was using for filter and now kind of looking for a filter grinder. I have a niche for espresso and was wondering if best choice is to use it for espresso and filter or get a dedicated filter machine.

You're hearing absolutely correct. As an Ode 1.1 stock owner, I anecdotally concur.

I always thought HG-1 was espresso focused. The socratic guys have done some particle distributions on HG-1. Chart also includes data for some other Mazzers which may be relevant since the HG-1 comes with 83mm Mazzer burrs: https://www.instagram.com/p/-1QCfxyuHk/

You're right HG-1 just isn't a filter grinder. Thanks for getting that off my mind.
