I hadn't really heard of this grinder before! Lots of comparisons to the comandante in the reviews I've seen. Brian Quan has a pretty thorough review of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3HZ7hh21SU. Might also be worth sifting through the comments on Kyle Rowsell's latest review of it - I think quite a few of his subscribers bought on the basis of his first review.

The Lagom Mini performs similarly to most high end hand grinders in the cup. It also performs very well in terms of usage and retention (practically nil at filter settings).

Is there anyone that can provide insight on the lagom mini for filter brews? I leaning on it heavily and heavily since I'm dealing with single cups.

You're right HG-1 just isn't a filter grinder. Thanks for getting that off my mind.

I agree on the encore is a good option for entry level grinding and does a good job on filter brews. It has a similar burr to the ZP6 but the ZP6 will give you less fines. I have owned one and I was getting really good filter once I broke in the burrs. There is also a little bit of retention with the encore. In saying this if you start chasing clarity then the encore is not the best grinder as you will get some but it will not be super clear and that is where a flat burr option may be better. I think the new Fellow Ode will be available in Australia in February if you want to wait out for that one.

I always thought HG-1 was espresso focused. The socratic guys have done some particle distributions on HG-1. Chart also includes data for some other Mazzers which may be relevant since the HG-1 comes with 83mm Mazzer burrs: https://www.instagram.com/p/-1QCfxyuHk/

An Encore is a good option for filter at home on the cheap end of the spectrum. They can be had second hand relatively easily, and the support from the distributor in Australia is very good. No bells and whistles, but brews filter coffee that’s similar in style to the handgrinders that are often recommended (it’s a 40mm conical burr) and very good.

If you can stretch, i occasionally see the Vario’s second hand for only a hundred dollars or so more than an encore, and with the steel burrs a Vario is, in my experience, a much better brew grinder than the Ode. It has none of issues with grind size that the Ode has (although with your 40g batch sizes you’re probably in the clear), it’s cheaper, and it’s easier to get near perfect burr alignment.

One option for the more tinkerer inclined would be picking up a cheap Super Jolly and a pair of the SSP or Gorilla Gear Burrs. This package could be had for around $500 if you get lucky with a cheap SJ, and can be aligned to brew better filter coffee than any of the other options being considered, and will also last a lifetime.

You're hearing absolutely correct. As an Ode 1.1 stock owner, I anecdotally concur.

I love the ZP6 for filter does a really good job and very consistent grind size. I bought mine from their website and received it in 2 and a half days, 1Zpresso's customer service is great.

Bring this discussion back into light, I'm hearing the Ode without the SSP burrs is just not that great. Looking at the Ode to the HG-1 for a closer price comparison of landing one, does anyone have any insight on the HG-1 for performance in filter brews.

I donated my eureka specilita to my friend which I was using for filter and now kind of looking for a filter grinder. I have a niche for espresso and was wondering if best choice is to use it for espresso and filter or get a dedicated filter machine.

Blues1143 it's a definite change, whether that's an improvement to you is subjective. The K6 is like the other similar burrs, blended and sweet as a general trend. The ZP6 is closer to neutral presentation, with a slight bias to blended but only a little. It has a very wide zone of minimal harshness so when when it's not great it's not bad. Pretty much every cup I've ever made is more than drinkable.

If you are looking for bang for buck, hand grinder is the way to go.

Story time: I was on the Comandante and very recently picked up an Ode with v1.1 stock burrs (~500 AUD from Alternative Brewing). I still significantly prefer the Comandante brews over the Ode. I will probably upgrade to the SSP burrs (another 330AUD) which I suspect will probably push the Ode to outperform the Comandante (based on other users' comments). I can't think of a cheaper way to get high quality flat burrs in an electric grinder right now. This is all a roundabout way of saying that to me, ~830 AUD seems like the minimum you'd have to spend to get a new electric grinder that produces comparable quality to a top end hand grinder. So if maximising quality in the cup and minimising price are your goals, and you don't mind grinding by hand... go for a hand grinder.

i have the specialita and 1zpresso j-max which i alternate to use for v60

it is true what they say that specialita’s flat burrs give superior clarity but 1zpresso’s conical burrs give superior body.

it is not that much more effort to hand grind with the 1zpresso. the grinder is so well built grinding is easy-as.

if i had to recommend one for you, with a tight budget, go for the 1zpresso.

Bought the fellow ode v1 off another member and was super happy with how it performed. I found no issue with grinds for my 20g dose of filter beans - if you were doing smaller ratios then perhaps the “grind finder” issue might have been problematic.

I’d recommend it for sure and you can save up for Ssp burrs later which I did. I’ve replaced my burrs with Ssp cast burrs and love it every bit.
