The J-Max has 48mm conical burrs and the VS3 has 38mm conical burrs - which surprises me considering the VS3 is a much bigger device and could probably have been designed for the larger burr set, opening up the option of using third party burrs or more types from Varia.
The J-Max is about half the price of the VS3 and currently is a known product with plenty of reviews. I have a 12v 1/4 inch hex drill that can easily drive the J-Max at speeds close to those achieved by hand turning so there is that option. Just pour in the beans and fit the built-in hex driver to the top of the J-Max and pull the trigger (the option to use hand or power is nice).
I'm not too keen on a bright coffee which hits the front of the palate and prefer more rounded complexity in a sweeter, more substantially textured body that sits longer in the back of the tongue. More milk chocolate than dark chocolate. More mellow fruits than sharp citrus. More light-mid single origin roasts than light or mid-dark roasts.
Most of my drinks are oat Flat Whites but will drink Restretto if beans can yield a sweet cup.
Can anyone advise on what can be achieved with these tiny burrs and should I consider going higher in price to something like a DF64P with 64mm flat burrs or Mahlkonig Vario Home with 54mm flat burrs?
This is for espresso only and will be paired with something like a BES920 using VST baskets, weighed doses and probably a WDT with maybe a distribution tool in the workflow.
