  • DF83 vs 064s vs 078s

Obviously a theoretical question, since the Timemore 064s and 078s aren't out yet, and unknown pricing.

What do you think of something like the DF83 vs either of the Timemore grinders for espresso?

Interestingly, at least some users in the DF83 Facebook group, whom also have experience with the DF64 with SSP burrs, are favouring the 83mm flavour. Now I realise these aren’t the same burrs (no SSP for 83mm yet), and it may just be confirmation bias, but it does cause me to wonder about size and how that affects taste in the cup.

The variable RPM of the Timemore is attractive. There was also meant to be a variable speed DF64 in the works, but it doesn’t look to be out yet.

I can’t tell if third party 64mm burrs compatible with the Timemore - they responded "no" in their FB group, although Lance Hedrick seems to imply they will be in his review of the non-espresso version (and Timemore may just mean they don't support/endorse that, which I didn't expect anyway).

I’m only going to spend my hard earned cash on one grinder in the next few years. I’m “ready” to purchase something. Hard to choose! I should probably just wait and be pateient for reviews, but if the Timemore Kickstarter discount is hefty...

It looks promising, but I'd want to see a 's' review first. I tend to get suspicious when established companies use kickstart platforms.

Also I was just recently checking out electric goosenecks and Timemore's felt cheap considering its price - plus reviews don't rate it too highly. That makes me conclude if you can't get a kettle right, no way I'm giving an unknown grinder the benefit of the doubt.

If Lance is saying the 078 is US$400, I can't see the 064s or 078s being much more. Meaning different ball park to the DF83.

Plus how much do you value having a new grinder now vs waiting for the kickstarter to start, to finish and the delivery delays etc that often happen.

I have a DF83 but haven't developed the palate to comment on taste beyond it being more balanced than I'm used to, even to the degree of being a bit boring (only had about 0.5 kg through though). I'm happier than I expected to be with it. Feels the price, there's one hell of a motor in it going by the weight, no sloppy manufacturing, the aluminium cup holder, cup and are ring beautifully made, it makes the fast Sette look slow, no clogging (but that seems to be reported more at pourover grinds), no static, no RDT needed, WDT I find I need as I'm grinding finer now and small clumps do appear.

I thought timemore 078 is out? Saw it on Taobao or Aliexpress, can’t remember which one, but interested in someone testing it out first

I am feeling the same conundrum. The DF64 is currently on sale at Alternative brewing and I am tempted to buy it but it is the version 3.2 and not the version 4 which is the latest model. I am questioning whether the version will matter and whether the DF64 will be good bang for my buck or should I explore the Timemore version and wait.

I was considering a Timemore 064s but I was a bit put off by their video that demonstrated how to clean it. Seemed to require the removal of a lot of layers and screws. I could have lived with that but the real deal killer was a post from Timemore in the launch FB group recommending against changing the burrs out of for reasons of difficulty with alignment. I don't know if that's a real concern or if the poster was just being super cautious. Also, while the grinder itself looks great, it's ultimately up to the burr set to make or break it and I have no idea what burr set it comes with and I haven't seen any reviews of the 064s or 078s burrs. So I ended up going with the DF64V instead even though it's twice the price.

S version for espresso? What does the S stand for?

Has anyone decided to take the gamble? I have.

I've decided to try the 78s. At approx 750 AUD, it's the same price as an on sale DF64 (which I've been considering for a while). The fact that there's a launch price discount and tax+shipping is included make it a bargain.

Yes, ultimately the burrs matter, but:
        • It looks way better from a workflow perspective than the DF64
        • I'm impressed by Timemore handgrinders and scales. I think there's a strong likelihood Timemore will deliver.
        • The 78 burrs (not S) got a very good review from Lance - again, high-likelihood they'll at least be as good as the DF64.
        • It has a much better motor than the DF64 and looks better (in my opinion)
        • I like Timemore's focus on the right things - I like how they show their distribution for their grinders. Seems like their research is being conducted in the correct place.
        • The burrs for their handgrinders for the last few years have been innovative and well received.
        • The fines remover seems like a very logical way to handle fines.

Another big reason for the decision (I know this doesn't apply to lots of you) is that this will be my first single dose grinder. Since the workflow looks better than the DF64, and the price is very good, I think this is a good bet. A Niche is much more expensive. I think anyone without a single dose grinder should really consider the 64s at this price. Get in now at the launch price!

Really, the 64s is the no-brainer and overall best price/performance value. Only reason I'm going for the 78s is I'm an attempt to delay upgradeitis by spending an extra $300 now.

I backed a 064, but I think their PSD graphs are a bit useless. They only show down to 200um, which is much bigger than even the largest fines definition of 100um, I think they're around 40um. They also only show all the burrs at 750um gap (good on them for listing that), I think they should have showed the S burrs at espresso settings.

I purchased a 64s. Coming from a Lagom Mini, I think the 64s will be a good step up as an espresso only grinder while the Mini will remain as a dedicated v60 / pour over grinder.

I also like the idea that the 64s is compatible with standard off the shelf 64mm burrs.

I just got a 64s. at $450 it feels like a real bargain.

I have a df83 on the way so I opted for 64s, don’t really need two big burrs. Will eventually have one set for pour over and the other for espresso.

The launch has been an outrageous success from a sales point of view. Eleven hours after the launch the campaign is closing in on 3,700 backers and AU 2.4m (US 1.6 and GBP1.3m).

Pulled the trigger on the 78s.. I bought my niche some time ago as part of the original kickstarter campaign and, since then, my palate has slowly drifted towards the fruitier side of things. Hoping the large flat burrs of the 78s will help bring my setup back in line with my tastes. We (backers) still have until the 13 May to cancel our pledge without incurring any cost, so hopefully we'll see some more in-depth reviews of the "S" models before then from the usual suspects.

Yes, I have signed up for a 78s so I guess we get to wait and see how the Kickstarter goes - looked to be really well subscribed when I purchased my 78s

Price seems tempting but I did recently buy a DF64 and immediately upgrade to the SSP MP burrs without even trying the burrs the grinder came with. I do not know if this will be an improvement for me.

I backed the 78s, excited .....fingers crossed the burrs are good or SSP gets into the 78 mm game

Does anyone know why Timemore is saying their burrs should not be changed between models does it really affect alignment or do they want you to buy two grinders.

FYI, they're saying now they will sell burrs separately.
