I'm going to happily stick with the 078s pledge, i was after an all rounder single doser. Granted i'm about 80% espresso based drinks v 20% filter and with my pallete - i doubt that i'd personally be missing anything .

As much as i wanted a P64 i couldn't bring myself to part with that sort of cash . I'm in the camp of where the Timemore should be able to sustain me; where its upgrading my current grinder (Quamar Q50) . And if I want to get a full time filter grinder, I'll invest in something in the future (upgrade the hario hand grinder that is currently on filter duty).

For the kickstarter price and whats been said of it, i don't think i'll be disappointed.

One of the reviewers commented that the 78mm burrs would be around $400! For wannabe burr swappers that would make a strong argument for the 64mm variant.

Have a 78s on pledge that I will swap to a 78; primarily as I wanted a better filter option than my Niche currently.

Given the relative prices of the Timemore's - seriously considering picking up a 78S to replace the Niche for espresso / onsell the one I don't want.

Alternatively wondering if the price difference to a D64V or D83+SSP is worth the extra to a 78S for espresso.

Going to use timemores offer to swap my 078s for an 078 when the time comes. I was hoping to use the 078s for multipurpose but was a bit underwhelmed when it seemed that the grinder was too much of a jack of all trades and master of none. With my p64 I’m just going to shoot for the 078 and chase some good filter.

maybe as tailorcoffee once said, I'm the best bad influence in your coffee life?

Hi tompoland , yes I do agree with what you are saying, and of course the DF is available now and I do like the look of the V option. I would suspect that I wont see the 64S till the end of this year. Given the low cost of the 64S, I am thinking I will give it a go and then some time next year see if I need to move up. Heck I may even save up and look at a P64! If the 64S does not cut it I can part ways and look at the DF or P64 (or even the Zerno).

I have a feeling I am going to end up with a few grinders on my bench now, may be this is your influence (bad or good?). 😀😀

coffeemachinespecialist it costs a bit more but my guess is that DF64 fitted with Gorilla Gear (or SSP Espresso burrs) would likely produce a thicker and more flavorsome espresso in the roast range that you prefer.

I use the word "guess" because while I have 2x DFs on my bench fitted with the impressive GG and SSP burrs, I have not used a 64S. However Lance Hedricks has and via latest insta post, he says that the DF64 with SSP Espresso produces better espresso for his palate than the 64S. Bear in mind that Lance has a perchant for lighter roasts.

You could have a Gorilla Gear equipped DF64 on your bench within two weeks too. But you could also back the more lower priced, more aethically pleasing, and probably lower retention 64S and order Gorrilla Gears and fit them once your grinder is delivered.

How do you feel about waiting for the inevitable delays in delivery of the 64S? (Not wishing to be pessimistic, just realistic based on a lot of experience waiting for KS items).

Just to confuse you even more, another option would be buy a pre-loved DF64 now, whack the GG burrs in and then sell the DF when the 64S arrives, but keep the GG burrs. That gets you into a higher end grinding experience now and the sleeker 64S can take it's time to arrive.

Hey L3N, for milk based espresso drinks only, is the 64S the right call if you prefer heavier mouthfeel/traditional espresso flavour profile? I roast medium/dark beans typically.

As I expected, Lance's review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkxkZd1Kj5U) cemented the idea that the one I really want is the 078, so I've ordered one of those. I still have my Kickstarter pledge that I'll need to cancel before 14/5 if no one else wants it. It was done within the first few hours and at the initial discount level. I pledged for an 064 but can switch to the 064S or upgrade to the 078S for the same price as the initial 078S price. I imagine I'll still have to go through with it but when they email for final model, name and address I could give someone else's. I will be cancelling my pledge late next week if I haven't found someone else in Australia who wants it. Please DM me if you do.

Phillydelphia the 078 produces noticeably fewer fines, and is way less prone to stalling. I did not enjoy the SSP MPs at all for how I like to brew filter coffee (multiple pours with stirring at high temps). I could stall the MP brews extremely easily.

I upgraded my Ode burrs to MPs based on a pretty naive view that they were "the best" for filter on the 64mm platform. I now understand that these burrs are intentionally designed by SSP to be multipurpose burrs - i.e., they need to produce enough fines for espresso puck resistance. I also now appreciate that what I was actually chasing was a low to no fines grind distribution, and so the MPs were destined to be a big downgrade for me compared to the Comandante. The only enjoyable cups I got from the MPs were using a recipe of bloom + 1 big gentle pour with short brew time. It was also very coffee specific - if the green or roast does not suit that "one big blast" style of brew, it seems like there's almost nothing you can do to make it taste good. This style of brewing also prevents any significant body in the cup - probably why they got the reputation as a clarity focused burr. And while some of these cups still tasted great, I found it very limiting since it essentially ruled out the multi pour brew style which in my experience tends to be the most forgiving across a range of roast profiles.

I have put the Ode + MPs aside as my espresso grinder for when I get into that properly.

I have been asking Timemore a few questions about the grinder via the kickstarter page. One of them of course is about the hopper. They said they are starting to look at new options and may/will offer a new hopper in the future. I think given so many reviews/blogs sites are talking about this up they will probably offer a separate new hopper after they get a lot of the orders out the door. Else 3D printed options will turn up. A vertical hopper like the Zerno Z1 grinder (which has a similar design shape for the grinder) would have been a much better option.

Their hopper looks very good aesthetically , but as we know sometimes what looks good does not perform as well as it should. Looking forward to my 64s, hopefully it turns up by the end of this year!
