  • Rocky - Doser or Naked

    New to the game....

Just contemplating a Miss Silvia and Rocky grinder.

Any comments on Doser versus Doserless would be appreciated.

    Many thanks

    percusso welcome to Coffee Snobs.

Let me start by saying that this question has been debated to death.

Im sure if you do a search youll find many arguments for you to read.

Im firmly in the doser camp.

A doser model can be used like a doserless (grind for one basket at a time) but not the other way around.
I also find they make less mess.

      Hi Percusso

I have owned both doser and doserless
I like them both I really do

I finally settled on a dosedless Macap M4D

It is personal preference in the end
I know this answer may not help but try B/4 you buy if possible

I have the Rocky Doserless. I looked at both but it seems clear to me that you are nearly always going to have some "pollution" with the doser from previous coffee grinds still being present. So unless you find yourself needing to make a fair few coffees in succession on a regular basis, I would go for the Rocky Doserless, ensuring you have fresh coffee each and every time.

cremachine, on the point of left over grinds - the Sunbeam 0450 leaves a lot behind in the chute; does the Rocky doserless leave a clean chute?

Nope there is always quite a bit of coffee left in the chute of the rocky. It isnt that easy to reach to clean either. I generally pulse the grinder before grinding my beans (wastes a bit of beans but dislodges most old coffee from the chute). This method cant be used tho if you weigh/dose your beans before grinding.

Re: Rocky - Doser or Naked

There are a lot of variables as to whether doserless is a good choice. I found that my doser Rocky still exhibited clumping. A doserless model would have been even worse. Coffee roast level, age, humidity when you are grinding and more all contribute to clumping. A doser can help break that up. There were also times when I was grinding a half pound of coffee at a time for friends, and it was nice not to have to monitor the process the entire time.

As far as "pollution," there is FAR more coffee left in the grinding chamber and in the burrs than left in the doser. I would not let that sway you at all. There are some very easy mods that can be done to a doser to get it to be nearly 100% clean with a few clicks of the dosing lever.

The doser also makes it a lot easier to distribute the coffee in a portafilter because you can "dispense" it at your own rate while moving the PF around. Works great on my Mazzer.

Not so much an argument against doserless, but an argument for dosers..

                Thundergod,

I find that it depends of the beans you are using. When I use beans that are oily and shiny, then it leaves some residue on the chute and mouth. But generally, with some good quality beans, I find it does come out quite cleanly.

Re: Rocky - Doser or Naked

I have just started using a Macap M4 with doser and although it is probably overkill for one person having 2 coffees a day, it certainly came into its own when i had about a dozen people to serve on the weekend. Being able to be grinding away while going throught the rest of the routine made the job easy (also gave me a chance to set the dose). The doser and chute does leave a few stray grinds but this is easily sorted with a small brush.

This is one of those how long is a bit of string things. BTW it is twice as long as half its length

As a recent user of a doser coming from a doserless. The doser is nice if you can get it into the PF without slopping it over the sides and making a mess. If like me you finish up with a smaller than commercial PF then this is a bit of a problem. Using a doser on a 58mm standard PF it works well for me. For all round low mess and fuss I have been still dosing into a small tray with a pouring lip then distributing into the PF from there for a no mess solution. If I was running a higher output shop style then straight from the doser to the PF is the only way to go.

So which one to use? as above if you go doser then you have a choice how you use it and the cost difference on the rocky is very little.

I think doserless LOOK better on the kitchen counter.

That maybe but you dont get that authentic cafe clack clack of the doser unless there is stones going into your doserless burrs :

Lucky me I have another doserless grinder heading my way in a day or two but it will be left for grinding for Syphon/Aeropress 8-) and Plunger for others :P

You could always playback a recording of a doser being used or hit a spoon rapidly on the benchtop to simulate the sound.

Re: Rocky - Doser or Naked

I find that with my doser model, the little plastic forks hold my Portafilter too closely to the doser.

So after Ive dosed and I pull my PF away to tamp, the mound or heap of coffee grind catches on the underside of the doser and I get a mess of grinds falling onto the "foot" of the Rocky.

So I now put a wide dish there to catch the grinds that fall off.

Some people remove the forks for this reason.

The thing about the doser Rocky is that I reckon one has to modify it with the "electrical tape method" so that it sweeps clean. Left "untaped" there is a lot of coffee left behind in the chamber. Yes...definately add the tape so that there is fresh grounds everytime one chooses to dose!

The annoying thing about the Rocky doser is that it does not let you adjust the tension of the dosing spring.
