Re: Rocky - Doser or Naked

From what I can remember from having seen the dosered rocky aaages ago, the doser struck me as pretty cheap and plasticky. As tempestv8 said, the vanes didnt seem to touch the bottom of the chamber and, so, would probably need modification to fix them. I also remember thinking at the time that the plastic portafilter holder looked like it might snap if a metal portafilter hit it too quickly.

I ended up buying a doserered rocky over a doserless one years ago and have since upgraded my way through a number of grinders.

IMHO, I think that the recent introduction of the compak K3 touch grinder to the Australian market makes the rocky a much worse value proposition, to the point where I cant really think why one would ever prefer the rocky. For a bit more money on the K3, you get a grinder with stepless grind adjustment, nicer fit and finish and a removable hopper with shutoff gate. Thats just off the top of my head. It wouldnt surprise me if it is also faster, quieter and results in a better shot of espresso than the Rocky, but I havent done a head to head to be able to say that with confidence.

    Cheers,

    Luca

Ive always favoured doserless, mainly because if you want to grind for something other than espresso, you can fit a plunger glass under the spout pretty easily

also makes rocky much easier to clean, comes apart with 5 screws (inculding the spout on the front)

with the economy the way it is at the moment, it might be worth looking to something like a VBM machine (provided you are planning on the PID silvia)
