  • Coarse grind on Sunbeam 0480

Hi all.  Way back in June I moaned about my Sunbeam 0480 giving me a coarse grind (http://coffeesnobs.com.au:80/YaBB.pl?action=post;num=1212370850 - "Looking for a Rocky in Auckland").  Am I becoming dyslexic in my old age, or did I really read that I should add another washer to make the grind finer?  I finally received an extra washer from Sunbeam NZ today, and duly installed it (one washer to start with for total of 2 washers).  However, the grind became even coarser.  So I removed both washers, and I can now get close to a very fine grind, which my 6910 prefers, at -0  :-/   Is my 480 possessed ?

Would really appreciate some advice before I go back to Sunbeam NZ.

    Thanks

    Cheers
    CJ

Must be possessed... Under normal circumstances, it is hard to imagine how dropping the bottom burr  is going to give a finer ground..

1: Two burrs are in place...
    2: Bottom one fixed
3: Top one is adjusted downwards to reduce the distance between the burrs to give a finer output.

Depending on the distance between the burs at set up  O setting should almost have the burrs touching and  20 plus should see a bigger gap = course grind.

A: If one is not seating the top burr correctly, it can be done such that even at O or close to O the grind is course...  This then compounds and adjustments you might make to the bottom burr.

B: After adding washers, I always inspect under good lighting and then start course and slowly bring the setting down.

A mate did his and caused problems as he incorrectly seated his top burr, then added washers and then correctly seated the top bur..  Outcome was that at a setting of 10 his burrs were engaging...   :-[

At the end of the day, if every thing is in place as designed: I fail to see, how dropping washers and lowering the bottom burr  will give you a finer grind... :

Addendum: I got out the magnifying glass and checked the photos on the instructions. My grinder has a "frilly"washer thingy under the nut, but the machine in the photo does not. Now Im double confused !

The washers are hidden under the bottom burr.   The frilly washer is an anti shake washer to attempt to make sure it does not vibrate loose.

You have to remove the Nut (L/H thread) , frilly washer and the Locater for the hopper.  Then you remove the bottom burr.  Then you will see the locating drive pin and a thin washer or two...

Add your new washer and reassemble  in the reverse order...  Making sure that the bottom burr is seated correctly, then att the locator, frilly washer and nut (L/H Thread).  Re assemble the top carrier etc and take special care when engaging the top burr and the white position mark.

Then start course and make your adjustments.  If all is OK you should be about 10 - 15  but could be something slightly different.

Does this all make sense ???

Re: Coarse grind on Sunbeam 0480

Thanks. On first installing the new washer, had started the grind at the coarsest and worked to fine. Have done this three times (very carefully) now. Same result: with washers the grind is mega coarse/without washer and on 0 I get a fine grind (but still not as fine as I have had to purchase if I want an espresso). Definitely possessed I think. Everything is definitely seated correctly - although I dont have a white positioning mark. Think Ill contact Sunbeam tomorrow, but I dont hold much hope

          Cheers

1: Try reseating the top burr holder... It can be fitted two ways... One will give you a courser grind...

If the washers as placed correctly, it is a physical impossibility not to get finer...

Your machine must be possessed or working in reverse.. I will take pics of one of mine to upload, so you can confirm.. Sorry, just can not see how you can get what you appear to get... Unless the top burr is not engaging / positioned correctly.

              Hi CJ

I have a Em0480 that would only grind coars when I first try to tune it in, Rang Sunbeam and they told me to remove 1 or boath washers from under the bottom burr ,After removing 1 washer I found that my setting fore fine grinds wher between 10 /13..depending on beans.

Hi AM. Thanks for the pics. Much appreciated.
You said "1: Try reseating the top burr holder... It can be fitted two ways... One will give you a courser grind... " As far as I can see it can only be reseated one way. Can you explain the two different versions? Also, my grinder does not have any of the white markings/text. Older model/rogue part??? There is a small notch which just about matches a corresponding notch but they will not/cannot match completely.

Will try to phone Sunbeam later today, but Im not optimistic ...

                  Cheers

An easy misunderstanding... Up / Down ... coarse / fine ... High / low setting can always be confusing and then the old brain kicks in and add anoth concept and the tong performs something else...

1: To go coarse, remove a washer and or make sure the top burr is seated correctly.
2: To go fine, add a washer or two as required and always check the to make sure the top burr is seated correctly.

Re: SUNBEAM NZ ROCKS / Eating my words (was Coarse

I took a days leave and trundled my 6910 and 480 to off Sunbeam NZ at their invitation.   For the 480, they replaced one of the burrs and gave me one of the new silicone spouts.  The 6910 has had a spacer added to the group head, a new steam knob and a new steam tip.   Theresa and Pramesh/Praman (?) tinkered and brewed for nearly 1 1/2 hours.  Went through a whole bag of Allpress beans (my tipple of choice) to find the perfect grind.  Im now doing a happy dance ;D  YAYYYYYYYYYYY   (Can you tell Im a happy camper?)  Just made myself the perfect latte (decaf by this stage!)  BTW, the perfect grind for my Allpress beans is 8-9.
                          Cheers,
                          CJ
