Re: Coarse grind on Sunbeam 0480

I sent sunbeam an email from their website, got a reply back from a CS rep copying me in on a Q to her boss if he knew what I was talking about. Heard nothing for weeks (or maybe a month or so) and then one day the spout just turned up.

I found Sunbeam NZ good - just took a while to get the dialogue going.  Theyre not set up for extensive customer contact though - too small.  If you can, make friends with your local service agent

I rang Sunbeam NZ about this spout thing, they didnt want to have anything to do with me and referred me to the christchurch service agents.
How did your experience dealing with them go? I was assuming that theyd send me one directly.

Ive found since removing a washer from my SB480 that it is a lot more tolerant of the amount of beans in the hopper, and it no longer seems to get finer the less beans that are in the hopper.

The silicone spout extension is also good and I now grind direct into the handle, with only a "moderate" amount of mess (ofcourse, the Mrs version of moderate mess and mine may differ slightly). Im pleased Sunbeam NZ managed to get hold of some of these.

I took a days leave and trundled my 6910 and 480 to off Sunbeam NZ at their invitation.   For the 480, they replaced one of the burrs and gave me one of the new silicone spouts.  The 6910 has had a spacer added to the group head, a new steam knob and a new steam tip.   Theresa and Pramesh/Praman (?) tinkered and brewed for nearly 1 1/2 hours.  Went through a whole bag of Allpress beans (my tipple of choice) to find the perfect grind.  Im now doing a happy dance ;D  YAYYYYYYYYYYY   (Can you tell Im a happy camper?)  Just made myself the perfect latte (decaf by this stage!)  BTW, the perfect grind for my Allpress beans is 8-9.
    Cheers,
    CJ

    Hi AngerManagement

My mistake on course and fine it had to be grinding to fine when I rang SB and they told me to remove the washers sorry about that , The photo show is excellent  thanks..

    Cheers Gra..
An easy misunderstanding... Up / Down ... coarse / fine ... High / low setting can always be confusing and then the old brain kicks in and add anoth concept and the tong performs something else...

1: To go coarse, remove a washer and or make sure the top burr is seated correctly.
2: To go fine, add a washer or two as required and always check the to make sure the top burr is seated correctly.

Hi AM. Thanks for the pics. Much appreciated.
You said "1: Try reseating the top burr holder... It can be fitted two ways... One will give you a courser grind... " As far as I can see it can only be reseated one way. Can you explain the two different versions? Also, my grinder does not have any of the white markings/text. Older model/rogue part??? There is a small notch which just about matches a corresponding notch but they will not/cannot match completely.

Will try to phone Sunbeam later today, but Im not optimistic ...

    Cheers

Thanks.  On first installing the new washer, had started the grind at the coarsest and worked to fine.   Have done this three times (very carefully) now.  Same result: with washers the grind is mega coarse/without washer and on 0 I get a fine grind (but still not as fine as I have had to purchase if I want an espresso).  Definitely possessed I think.  Everything is definitely seated correctly - although I dont have a white positioning mark.  Think Ill contact Sunbeam tomorrow, but I dont hold much hope

    Hi CJ

I have a Em0480 that would only grind coars when I first try to tune it in, Rang Sunbeam and they told me to remove 1 or boath washers from under the bottom burr ,After removing 1 washer I found that my setting fore fine grinds wher between 10 /13..depending on beans.

    Hope this helps Cheers Gra..

If the washers as placed correctly, it is a physical impossibility not to get finer...

Your machine must be possessed or working in reverse.. I will take pics of one of mine to upload, so you can confirm.. Sorry, just can not see how you can get what you appear to get... Unless the top burr is not engaging / positioned correctly.
