Hey there guys. So Ive been struck by the upgradeitis again. Well, technically it struck a while ago and Ive been saving for a few months. Ive been saving to pick up a new Rocky which goes for NZ$530 (cheapest I can find it in the country) however Ive just found a secondhand Mazzer Super Jolly that I think I can get for about $300. It apparently has had a new hopper, motor capacitor and burr set fitted. Ill be using it mainly for espresso so I like the idea of an infinite adjustment style grinder. My question is, is it worth hanging out for a new rocky or is a second hand SJ going to be a much better option?

I also agree- Mazzer is a no contest choice here. The SJ is a great grinder, but even a Mini will give you great grind quality- just a slower rate than the SJ...The pricing of the SJ is great though!
I frequently get potential clients who want to purchase a great machine and then try to avoid purchasing a grinder or try to buy the cheapest grinder they can find. For mine, I personally believe that its foolish to spend $2.5k+ on a machine and then pair it with a $300 appliance quality grinder.
As so many here say on a regular basis, get the best grinder you can possibly afford.
Good luck!

Re: Need your advice - Rocky or SJ?
Hi 22a,
For espresso the SJ is your pick and will outperform the Rocky. However the Rocky is a capable espresso grinder and if youre going to make the occasional plunger having a stepped grinder will make it pretty easy to change between espresso grind and plunger grind.

Re: Need your advice - Rocky or SJ?
With all the usual provisos... What everyone above has already recommended ;D
Would pay to see it working though before parting with the cash, not just idling either... Put a couple hundred grams of beans through it then look, listen and smell for anything unusual. If alls good on that front then grab it mate....

Re: Need your advice - Rocky or SJ?
Thanks guys I thought that might be the case. Its up in Auckland so I cant go and see it in action (although the seller has offered a demonstration if needed). I guess my real issue is weighing the risk that theres a defect with the SJ with the fact that Im getting this for super cheap. If theres any Coffeesnobs in Auckland that might be able to check it out for me I would be happy to reimburse them for the trip.

Re: Need your advice - Rocky or SJ?
I used a Rocky for +/- 7 years. I have had a Mazzer Kony for about 7 months now. No contest. The Rocky, while being a decent machine, is a toy compared to the Mazzer. Worst case, you might need to put new burrs in the Mazzer, but that grinder was designed to work in a coffee shop, month after month, without problem. The design of the way the burrs mount and adjust make it worth it alone. The Rockys top burr mount will eventually develop a wobble, and being that it is a stepped adjustment, the control you have would be inferior. If it is in god condition, get the Mazzer.

Re: Need your advice - Rocky or SJ?
As long as its running and sounds good (ie not needing a bearing change unless youre up for that) then at that price a neat looking Mazzer SJ is well worth it against the price of a new Rocky. The Rocky is a great grinder - particularly with some simple mods to reduce play and make it stepless - but its not a SJ by any means. I still use both my Rocky and the SJ regularly and wouldnt part with either, but for the money your looking at you could afford to throw a burr set at the SJ and have it for life.
Cheers

I see the SJ has had some work done including new set of burrs
Just to give you an idea (read recently here on CS)
On quality machines a burr set will last about 400 kg of beans
That’s many many years of use at home
If you dont buy it PM me the sellers details and I will find a home for it in Brisbane
