Update - Whirley Pop Junior (WP) “semi-autom
Hi,
Here is an update for those how are interested.
I changed the 70 RPM (torque 2.1kg/cm) motor for 36 RPM (torque 12.0kg/cm) motor.
It has heaps of power to turn 500Grams of beans but my wooden mounting wants to lift off so it really needs to be screwed on or use a large counter weight.
So I decided to roast the same amount 250grams.
FC 14 min.
SC 17:45 min.
Pulled at 18:00 min.
With the slower rotation the roast is faster but is it even? The roast slightly less even but still ok.
I will roast another batch with the gas burner turned down a bit too match the roasting length of the previous roast with the faster motor before I try 500Grams..
I will let you know the results.

Re: Whirley Pop Junior (WP) “semi-automatic” V 0.1
Hi,
I have been roasting 250 gram batches and did a test with 500 gram with no heat, the motor could not turn with the extra load. I am going to test it with a more powerful motor.
I am very happy with the roast it is very even.
The chaff stays in the Whirley Pop so there is no mess in the kitchen, when I am finished roasting I tip it into a sieve take it out side and use a fan to cool the bean the chaff is removed here.

Hi there
Ingenious Idea and whats even better is that the roast looks very even.
What size batches do you think you can do in this? And what happens to the chaff?

Whirley Pop Junior (WP) “semi-automatic” V 0.1
Hi Everyone,
I thought I should share some pictures/videos of my new coffee roaster. I started off with a frying pan, upgraded to a Whirley Pop Junior but I found the handle got too hot to hold while turning the crank.
As you can see from the pictures I am using a frying pan under the WP because the WP is made from light weight aluminum and is designed to produce popcorn in three minutes.
I setout to automate the bean rotation somehow; I purchased a small 12V 70 RPM geared motor from Jaycar (CAT. NO. YG2732). I decided not to mount it directly to the WP (was temped) as I thought it would get too hot and having the manual crank was a good backup should the motor fail.
To keep it attached to the WP I drilled four small holes in the lid and drove four nails through the timber so it just sits on top. With the beans in I needed a counter weight to stop it from lifting under load.
The results are quite good nice even roast; FC 17 minutes pulled at SC 22minutes.
Anyway I thought it may help someone get started with roasting or give you a chuckle.
