The behmor 1600

Hey just wondering if anyone knows much about the "behmor 1600". i saw a few reviews on this roaster which were glowing, and they seem really well priced in US$ terms. However i cant find anything about them being avalable in this part of the world.

any views or info from those in the know?

They are designed and manufactured in America purely for the local market..... so would run 110V at 60 cycles.....

No one here in Australia will sell them unless they are type approved for the local power supply (240V and 50 cycles).... which clearly they arent!

So you could import one personally and run it off a hefty (read expensive) step down transformer - but the drum will only rotate at 5/6 the speed.... and the programs might also be affected if they use the mains frequency for timing....

That is why the local HT is so much more expensive than the American version..... it is a redesign of the unit sold in America for local power.... and because of relatively small sales of this version - it fetches a premium price.

Some time back (I think ) Randy G did mention they were looking at a 50hZ version but might be worth an email to ask them if it is any closer.

A couple of 50hz/230V prototypes are in circulation in the UK;
I think there are reports on the forum toomuchcoffee.com.

Steve from hasbean.co.uk (no relation unfortunately ) has been
working with Behmor to get a UK version for sale.

Update on the behmor 1600

So i just thought i would let everyone know i shot an e-mail off to Behmor and here is the great news i recived:


"Thank you for emailing.. We have a 220-240v modle that has finally recd CE and GS approvals and Ill be travelling to Asia in 2 weeks to review minor changes so production can begin.. Hope to have these in Australia by mid April-early May... "

anyone else hopeing for a new toy? ;D

any word as to local distribution? Bearing in mind whoever gets it will need to get local approval as well >

If it is direct then you dont need approvals, just watch the $1000 AUD duty and GST cut off or add around 20% to the USD price along with frieght.

Did they indicate a price range
I would not be surprised if it will be sold @ about $750 to $1000 AU range

i might ask.....lol but at the same time i am afraid of the answer :P if it comes in at under the 750 mark i will defiantly get one. as for imports i have no idea...i would GUESS..from the web site they seem to have set distributers in north America so i would think it will be the same situation here..

take a look on the sweetmarias website - there do seem to be some shortcomings with the roaster in terms of adjustability compared to the hottop and the gene cafe.

I would be very interested to hear some "local" views on it when they do become available

But, on the other hand, full pound roasts, and push-button operation - sounds like a winner to me!

(I want one) (but it would have to be the 240v 50Hz UK model - which will cost £££).

FWIW, i have been in touch with Joe Behm on and off for the last 2 years and as far as i know he started developing the roaster for the 220V European as well as the 240V Aussie market as soon as the first container of US models were landed.
he said 18 months ago that it would take about 2 years to "get it right", so it sounds as if the development and testing of the European model is on track.
once he has the Australian models specs sorted, i am sure there will be no shortage of interested importers/distributors

As with any roaster some will love it and some will not. The afterburner works pretty well to limit smoke for indoor roasting, not smokeless but smoke less. You have profiles you can set to adjust the percentages of heat applied but you do not have true manual control. Say your approaching first crack and want to level out the temp. You cant just do it on the fly you have to plan it with experience with your presets and time adjustments. You have no BT or ET readings. The afterburner is nice but eats about 1/3 of the available energy. This means that its possible to roast a pound but can take a little long. Better profile with a 1/2 pound + or minus. Cooling is done in the drum but is a little slow so that factor needs to be planed into the profile. You can terminate the roast when desired. Its designed to go a little into second crack but not for dark roasts. The afterburner will not keep up and the chaff that falls from the drum will begin to singe with increased smoke. There is no flame/fire. The drum is a wire mesh and allows good heat penetration. The heat is mostly radiant with some environmental. There is just a little convection. The fins in the drum do a good job of mixing the beans and roasts are pretty even. Keeping it clean inside is important for reflection and around the thermostat. There is a selfclean but also requires some manual cleaning. In the US adequate voltage can be a maximum performance issue for some as our voltage can vary from area demand, poor in house contact connections, long lighter gauge feed lines etc.(not sure if that will be a factor in AU.) Joes customer service has been really great with warranty issues and advice. Joe is a dedicated and hard working mate.
