Did you cut the strainer section from the skirt ?
Or is it a separate strainer insert
If it is cut it looks so neat. How did you do it??
The skirt was part of the strainer and was cut off. I was lucky that it was stepped in a way that suited using it as a collar for the bean bowl. It was a $50 kit from K-mart, came with a pot, glass lid etc.
I used a 9 inch grinder with a cutting disc (only because I couldnt find any 100mm cutting discs for the small grinder) then i cleaned up the edges with a bench grinder. Cuts were not that neat, and they dont need to be because of the strainers design (bit hard to explain) but it was quick!
WARNING: Fellow snobs please do not use a 9 inch grinder if you are not confident with using power tools, there are so many horror stories, in particular there was some poor bugger who cut his lower jaw into 2 when the grinder kicked up.
Probably will have to wait till i get back from my holiday for the first roast, will definitely let you know how it goes.

Almost there! I have tried to build this thing as quickly as possible and so it is a bit rough, maybe one day i will build a much prettier insulated version....
Just needs a few finishing touches e.g. seal around the lip of the pot, a handle for the bean basket, and insulation for the false bottom.
Certainly not ugly mate its a credit to you

Thanks for the perforated sheet KK.
My pleasure
With regards to the agitator on the the longer side
The bottom section should extend further to the centre as that is the portion that contacts the beans the most
I am now going to take my own advice and get a pasta strainer and retrofit my roaster

Can you spot the blue test bean??????
Yes I can its a cute little fella :
Like to hear how it roasts for you when you get around to it.
Time permitting
I did most of my roasting tests without the rim seal so you dont need it to roast but the seal is a good barrier to escaping heat
Blue paint is brake caliper paint, should easily cope with Turbo oven temperatures..
So far cost
$70 for turbo oven (ex demo unit)
$75 - for pots - Spaghetti cooker set, and the 15L stock pot (no doubt you can get then cheaper, i got sick of driving around)
$8 - 10mm 3/socket and 3/8th to 1/4 adapter from supercheap
Fortunately I had the rest of the stuff under my house or given to me.

Chucked in some stale roasted beans (which i got with my Coffee machine) to test out the agitator and all seems well.

By the way I have some off cuts of some perforated steel sheet
I you are planing to go to the cupping this Saturday I can give you enough to make the agitator
Will be there, might try and finish this thing over the weekend!

Yeah a 3/8 socket with a male to male adapter to an extension bar (of some sort) makes perfect sense. Thanks again..
Mine is set up the way you see it in the drawing
If you have a longer length of square section you can dispense with with the extender bar

What is the diameter & depth of your pot
You may not need to much alteration because it may be a smaller volume than mine
My pot is about 30cm x 30cm (15L pot)
The spaghetti cooker is a touch under 22cm in Diameter.
I cut up a disc for the false bottom tonight and cut the top collar off the spaghetti collar. The roasting insert fits perfectly into into the removed collar. I think the annoying bit is going to be centering everything and lining up all the holes, and sorting out a way of joining the 3/8 extension bar to the windscreen driver ....
For now i wont be insulating the pot. I have too many non coffee related things on my plate at the moment.
But the answer to you question is (from the above link page 12)
Current configuration of my roaster for up to 600 gr (1 to 1.2 pound) roasts is
Turbo Roaster heat plate to the base of the bean roasting insert is 18cm (7 inches)
From the top rim of the pot to the base of the bean roasting insert is 15cm (6 inches)
Bottom of the bean roasting insert to the (mod) false bottom is 5 cm (2 inches)
So that makes the depth from the pot rim to the false & insulated bottom is 20.5cm (8 inches)
The diameter of my pot is 29cm (11.5 inches) to fit the turbo oven with 1cm (1/2 inch) overlap
With the height adjustable roast chamber you can tweak roasts to your taste
Note: Roast times can be increased or decreased by moving the roast chamber closer or away from the Turbo Ovens heating element however optimum batch size will also be affected + or -
Roast size can also be increased by placing the false bottom higher effectively reducing the volume of the pot, available heat is then more controllable
