Did you cut the strainer section from the skirt ?
Or is it a separate strainer insert
If it is cut it looks so neat. How did you do it??
The skirt was part of the strainer and was cut off. I was lucky that it was stepped in a way that suited using it as a collar for the bean bowl. It was a $50 kit from K-mart, came with a pot, glass lid etc.
I used a 9 inch grinder with a cutting disc (only because I couldnt find any 100mm cutting discs for the small grinder) then i cleaned up the edges with a bench grinder. Cuts were not that neat, and they dont need to be because of the strainers design (bit hard to explain) but it was quick!

WARNING: Fellow snobs please do not use a 9 inch grinder if you are not confident with using power tools, there are so many horror stories, in particular there was some poor bugger who cut his lower jaw into 2 when the grinder kicked up.

Probably will have to wait till i get back from my holiday for the first roast, will definitely let you know how it goes.

Stole handles from the steamer insert from the Spaghetti cooker kit and put them in the roasting insert, modified the agitator too. Its ready to roast!!!!!!!

I am really enjoying the TO roaster, I have wrapped the stock pot with about 10m of aluminum foil which has helped with insulating it a lot.

Tasting has been a learning experience, I am surprised how much the bean has changed day to day, i made the mistake of leaving some in the hopper overnight in this incredibly humid weather and it really messed with my grind settings, i ended up wasting heaps getting my shots just right.
I have since roasted a 400g and a 425g batch with no problems using the insulated pot - probably would have been fine without insulation.....

                      Re: KK inspired roaster build

Just thought Id add an update of the turbo oven roaster now after a few months of moderate use.  The roaster has done at least 13kgs in total without any problems. I have been using the CS multimeter and probe for the last 5kgs or so, which has been a great tool to assist me with improving my roasts.
I have raised the false floor to reduce the chamber size by about 1L.
Here is a photo of the insulated roaster (-about 15m of aluminum foil wrapped around the pot) and the bean cooler. The unit seems most happy with a charge of around 375g.

Here is my latest roast 375g of Colombian Supremo
-Flash has taken some colour out.....

                          Good question TG
I dont know that i would bother with the TO unless it could be setup to do a 600gm roast batch.

I have done several 600 gram batches on mine
The important thing is volume and for colder climates insulation helps immensely

Keep total heat chamber volume under 11 ltr and you can roast 600 grams

I have posted on the main Turbo Roaster thread that I have a new TO design & the building of coming soon
A final draft of the original TO prototype
Its a pimped up version with all the tweaks incorporated and lots more :-X

I am hopeful to reach 800 gr to 1 kg batches
Once plans & 3D modelling is complete the build and testing will start

Place fibreglass insulation under the false bottom and it may help to increase the batch size

Did give it a go before i insulated the pot, ended up taking too long and got an uneven result. KKs roaster seems to handle the 600g batches. I am guessing that how close the bean mass sits in relation to the heating element has an effect on how these TOs perform. I am pretty sure my bean mass to heater element distance is greater than KKs TO and this may be affecting how it operates. I didnt really follow all KKs instructions perhaps i should have.......
