Thats fabulous news Chris and what a great way to kick off the New Year!

Funny how we mull over buying a roaster and then when it happens, realise we havent thought, "where to put it".  ;D

As 2mcm said, start with good beans - you wont learn anything from the cheapies.

Will look forward to reading of your experiences in the HG thread.

    Brilliant new Chris! Congrats!

Dont worry too much about inexpensive beans. Get great beans!

Suggested jobs:[*]Andys multimeter and roast monitor software. Dont know how people can roast without it. Oh actually, I do...Theyre the ones who brown beans :[*]Extra cooling- Tap in under the cooling pan with some duct and a factory ventilator or similar to get those beans to room temp pronto...

    Enjoy

The 5kg HG in top photo. In storage 4 years, only had 2 hours use since new.

Will be delivered by the seller on 15th or 16th this month  :P

Now the fun starts.....where to buy green beans for $1 per kg  :-/

Anyway lots to do, dont even have an exact place for it yet let alone sorting out where the smoke and chaff are heading and how?
Like Andy says though if its not fun Im not interested. I am in no hurry.... ;D

PS: Big thanks to Mark Beattie CRA, Den, Chris N, Andy and everyone else for their patience advice and quick replys to emails etc

    Cheers

Good news mate and good luck with the viewing. I have seen Chriss HG in action and with the cooler it is a great set up.

    Chin up Chris,

The right one will eventually come along for you.

I am with Dennis on capacity. I think you wil find that you rapidly outgrow a 1 or 2kg roaster. Also, you will find that you can easily roast down to 1.5kg in a 5kg roaster with Andys software and multimeter. FWIW, Mark is doing AMAZING work on HG roasters with fantastic new burners and some other impressive options on the way too. Its not only what the roaster looks like...

I am sure Dennis will agree that the irritations such as tipping and divots that can occur with other roasters just dont happen with HG. Mark imports without any gas work now. All gas work (and a heap of electrical as well) is done in QLD to guarantee superior performance over competitor roasters.

Ill most likely sell my setup this year and upgrade to a 4 motor- to tidy things up at the shed. Sadly, it would cost a fortune to ship across the ditch...

Keep looking and the right one will turn up... Happy NY

    Chris

    Hi Chris

Although your recent enquiries have fallen through, Im sure the right solution will present itself.

The 1kg options youve mentioned are fine, but from what Ive read about your exploits and aspirations, I think you would outgrow one of these very, very quickly. Thats OK if it ends up as your sample roaster or Im sure when the time comes, youll be able to recover most of your investment.

All the best with your decision, and youre always welcome to take a trip across the detch!

Well this guy seems to have fallen off the radar, not replying to email or phone. Oh well the search continues :-[
I know it goes against the grain but maybe one of those 1kg table tops from the US via CSA might be a safe start.
I have also seen a new 1Kg Gas Toper for $7.5K NZ vs $6.9K NZ for the Man Torrefattore.
The Gas Toper looks like alot more set up and maintenance and a much larger footprint at 80+kg and a metre deep.
The problem with the 5kg HGS was going to be where to set it up (we were looking at space away from home)
Maybe I am better start little :

    Re: Looking to buy a 2kg - 5kg roaster

    Hi redzone

As someone said, go for it. A 5kg at that price is a good starting point and well priced. I just got myself a 2 kg HG for hobby use only. As your starting off as a hobby and potential commercial business Id go for that 5 kg as your not over committing yourself. If your business takes off and you cant keep up demand for product then get a 10 kg. Second hand HGs at that size dont pop up often. Grab it, but not appear too eager, do try and negotiate a bit :-)

Also do listen to it running. The motors should be smooth and no clunks or grinding sounds i.e. bearings OK.

    Mike

Thats a bargain....I would go for it. It looks in good nick and has the bronze upgraded trimming which by itself is worth about $1200 on a new 5kg. Looks definately like the 3 motor model...the two motor models have a smaller control box.

The coffee snobs datalogger is a great inexpensive upgrade and most prefer to fit another cooling fan or extractor to speed up cooling times. Speak to Chris from Talk Coffee as he has done some good upgardes to his 5kg HGS model.

If you do buy it and need an operations manual just let me know. It has all the maintenace information as well.

    All the best..

    Cheers...Mark
