    Re: Looking to buy a 2kg - 5kg roaster

    Hi Chris

Although your recent enquiries have fallen through, Im sure the right solution will present itself.

The 1kg options youve mentioned are fine, but from what Ive read about your exploits and aspirations, I think you would outgrow one of these very, very quickly. Thats OK if it ends up as your sample roaster or Im sure when the time comes, youll be able to recover most of your investment.

All the best with your decision, and youre always welcome to take a trip across the detch!

        Re: Looking to buy a 2kg - 5kg roaster

        Chin up Chris,

The right one will eventually come along for you.

I am with Dennis on capacity. I think you wil find that you rapidly outgrow a 1 or 2kg roaster. Also, you will find that you can easily roast down to 1.5kg in a 5kg roaster with Andys software and multimeter. FWIW, Mark is doing AMAZING work on HG roasters with fantastic new burners and some other impressive options on the way too. Its not only what the roaster looks like...

I am sure Dennis will agree that the irritations such as tipping and divots that can occur with other roasters just dont happen with HG. Mark imports without any gas work now. All gas work (and a heap of electrical as well) is done in QLD to guarantee superior performance over competitor roasters.

Ill most likely sell my setup this year and upgrade to a 4 motor- to tidy things up at the shed. Sadly, it would cost a fortune to ship across the ditch...

Keep looking and the right one will turn up... Happy NY

        Chris

                    Re: Looking to buy a 2kg - 5kg roaster

                    Brilliant new Chris! Congrats!

Dont worry too much about inexpensive beans. Get great beans!

Suggested jobs:[*]Andys multimeter and roast monitor software. Dont know how people can roast without it. Oh actually, I do...Theyre the ones who brown beans :[*]Extra cooling- Tap in under the cooling pan with some duct and a factory ventilator or similar to get those beans to room temp pronto...

                    Enjoy

Thats fabulous news Chris and what a great way to kick off the New Year!

Funny how we mull over buying a roaster and then when it happens, realise we havent thought, "where to put it".  ;D

As 2mcm said, start with good beans - you wont learn anything from the cheapies.

Will look forward to reading of your experiences in the HG thread.

                              Re: Looking to buy a 2kg - 5kg roaster

                              Hello All.

Great topic, and I hope you dont mind me adding to it.

A roasting machine that doesnt like to roast its nominated batch size has a problem and from my own personal experience, I would venture an opinion that it is not set up properly.

Not wishing to upset, but that is my experience.

                              ******************

Whilst manufacturers will generally offer a range of models within a certain batch size, it is always best practice to pay the ransom and buy the "best" model they offer.

This means, if the manufacturer offers you a choice of say 2 models in the 5 kilo size, if it were me I would buy the one they recommend is the better one and that will usually mean the more expensive one and in the case of small roasters, that will usually mean the machine with more motors and a better burner.

Also, it pays to run with 3 phase motors over single phase. They are more expensive.

                              *********************

Unfortunately, "starters" dont usually have much expertise in the field or funds to start thrir venture with and are more likely to take the cheaper options. But, you have to get into the nitty gritty to find out what the benefits are if you pay the ransom and it usually means you get a better end result.

Most starters also dont realise that a roasting machine is not a thing that you just plonk on the ground, plug in, and start roasting with. This is what I referred to above when I mentioned "set up".

The above is what you "should" consider when buying new from the nmanufacturer / importer / agent.

Unfortunately when you buy second hand, you dont get a choice, and that will sooner or later start you off on the usual round of "modifications" to try and get the thing to do what you want, once you have determined exactly what that is!

And therefore, the size of the batch roaster that a "starter" wants to buy as hs first roaster, is only one part of the equation to considedr.

As an aside I would like to make a few small but interesting points:

                              a) It could be said that the only reason anyone with the less expensive Turkish or Greek roasters wins medals at various roasting competitions....is because the greatest proportion of entrants are using these smaller roasters!

                              b) Many well established roasting machine manufactuteres wil tell you straight out that small sized batch roasters do not / can not duplicate what bigger sized industrial roasters will do with the coffee ("industrial" = 60 kilo minimum batch).

EG Scolari sells their 2 kilo benchtop roaster for 45,000 EuRO. A roasting company using that machine to design their roast profiles and blends, can rely on the fact that when they transpose those profiles into their industrial roaster, the end result will be the same.

EG Probats sample roaster (200 grams?) somewhere around 6000 EURO or more, also dupicates what the large machine will do.

EG Brambatis sample roaster....around 8000.00 EURO.

Now convert these Euro figures to Oz dollars and include delivery and all set up costs, and compare to batch size!

                              There is a reason.

May not be relevant here....but interesting.

                              Regardz,
