Thats all well and good but very few post in this thread are even relevant to my questions. One of the most frustrating things about this site is that there are a few very vocal members whos standard response to any roasting questions is "get a corretto" no offence to anyone who has posted on this thread, but I have read this response a million times on this forum. while this may be the flavour of the month at the moment with out anyone trying something different how are we to ever know what other options may be out there?
I have a fairly simple idea, and I decided to post it here to see if someone had any insight into weather it would work or not.  So far I have had very few posts that even address the design.

One last thing - as far as all the electrical safety posts go, I can understand the worry with liability from the mods of the sight but honestly - if you are so stupid that you do not know that 240V electricity is dangerous and can kill you then you deserve what you get. In my opinion the constant posting is the same as if when someone posted that they were going down to Bunnings to get parts that a hundred people should warn them about how dangerous a car can potentially be.

I dont mean to piss anyone off with this post, I just wanted to point a few things out in a constructive way. I hope everyone will forgive my rant and have a merry christmas

As to Electrical safety... Well if  a few of us had our way...  There would be a lot less...  However today is all about the lowest common IQ..  Thus many do not know or think that mains voltage is dangerous... Fimilarity breads contempt.  PS.  It is a lot higher than 240V...  240 is the root mean squared value.

As to your post.. And needing 300g ...  Well for lots of reasons ya got an answer... But maybe not what you expected...  Many old popper users here; but for many reasons, many have moved on... SIZE is the main reason..  Thus once you start try to mod a popper... To get 300g or larger... You might as well go and reinvent the whole process...  Time Vs Money Vs tools Vs cost effectiveness Vs What is already out there...

Dont like Bread makers (lots of reasons)...  Size is dependant on the BM and teh heat gun and ya setup etc etc

Poppers...  Too fiddlrey   ;D  For small single batches... GREAT..

    KKTO Yes..  150g - 1kg

    Gene Cafe.. 100 - 275g   Dont like

    HotTop Yes  125g - 300g

    Others... YES

    All costs $$$

Had a popper.. Ptth... Had a hottop.. Not bad... Shame could not do 600 - 750 g or would have stayed with it...

    KKTO - Love it...

Smal Roaster as in teh latest Beansene Mag...  Priceless.. If I will Lotto... Thats for ME..     Many $k between the KKTO and that.. Sorry... Lotto option only.

Moving double the beans means you will need a bigger fan.
A bigger fan may cool the element too much so you might need a bigger element.
If your sparky knows if its possible to install a toaster element Id suggest it would be good if it was adjustable so that you could use less heat if need be.

After radically modifying my popper I moved on to a bowl and heat gun and then to a corretto.

I now have a KKTO since my correttos motor had died.

I think youre being a bit blinkered when you say youve read the "get a corretto" response a million times.
We also mention, poppers, bowls, woks, BBQ drums etc.

And by the way, the current flavour of the month is KKTO.

        Re: Mega Popper

        Hi Aaron

if you look at the pic in my reply #17 with the "whole" popper jammed on the BM you can see the turbo oven in the background.

I had a bit of an idea around the actual "round" bit of the turbo oven where the heating element is. (not the glass)

The idea was to mount that vertical / sideways in a "barrel" type roaster something like the quest 3 roaster. see link
        http://www.home-barista.com/home-roasting/exhaust-in-quest-m3-roaster-t12631.html

i was considering using a popper as the heat unit but the overheating and lack (IMO) of control of heat is a major negative for "mega poppers" the poppers i have run empty to test heating all seem to overheat quite quickly not sure if its the bean mass that allows them to do a roast or just something i am doing to "cook" them. I think the longevity of the elements would be shortened considerably if modding them to do large batches? (not proven but by me)

I reckon the way forward is solid elements as they will retain some heat and allow better control via PID or thermo / triac / etc controllers. But of course thats my opinion.....

I have seen a few picks of bigger poppers (fluid bed style) using what looks like a small flour sifter as the "bed". not sure how they perform.

i think many say "get a corretto" as they are proven for 500grm plus roasts and most who have tried poppers feel the roast size limits it. I reckon we are mostly trying to give an opinion that trying to mod a popper to much is a wasted journey..... we (they) are not trying to offend just pass on learned experiences
