  • Roasting with KKTO

Thanks for all the help. I picked up my KKTO today and had a roasting demo with KK himself at Barazi which was fantastic. The roaster performed exceptionally well and I cant wait to get cracking on my first roast. Guys at Barazi where very friendly.. I had to resist all the shiney coffeemachines...

Thanks KK for the demo, it will make starting out so much easier. Cant wait to taste the results in a few days and post up my first roast.

Can anyone suggest any green beans to start off with????

      11.30 to rolling first crack
18.00 to second crack and pulled to cool
Enjoy in a few days if you can wait that long

        Re: Roasting with KKTO

Bought 2kg of Sumatran today (not sure what type but had that blue look that your beans did) from Pioneer. Didnt have much guidance because they dont roast on the weekend but I might pop back for a chat with the roaster next week for some more info and advice.

Going to give the roast a go tomorrow am. Will let you know how I go KK.

Is there a optimal weight that I should be roasting to start off with?

The KKTO Beta roaster has been tested from
450 grams to 850 grams so far

Still testing the KKTO and adding enhancements

I roasted 350g today and it possibly the best roast I have done so far. I followed it up with another 350g roast and the end result was very pleasing. I think TG has also done a sub-400g roast or two.

As long as the agitator mixes the beans well, that will be is its minimum

                  Re: Roasting with KKTO

I havent had time to do a roast yet, but I should get some quiet time tomorrow to do a few.

Built a cooler today using a old 240v ceiling fan (already has a plug so no electric safety concerns I hope) fitted to a big cardboard box that KK gave me for the KKTO and a hole for the beans in a colander (sp?) on the top. KK mentioned the design during our meeting and it only took minutes to build.

Will post up some photos of the first run tomorrow.. I cant wait but the mozzies are out to play so Im not game to head outside tonight.

                    Re: Roasting with KKTO

Did two roasts today... 33-35oC under the patio but its the first chance Ive had to get my new toy out to play.

                    Heres my KKTO

                    1st Roast

430 gram roast of Sumatran Mandheling Blue Batak Gr1 that KK left me.  Used the adapter ring & the towel.

Stabilizing pre roast for 5 minutes on 125
                    Zerod timer
Temp dial set to 250 deg Celsius
First crack was @ 12 min
Rolling first crack @ 13-15 min
Backed off temp to 225 deg Celsius for 90 seconds after rolling first crack and back up to 250 deg
First snaps of second crack was observed @ 18.30 min/sec
Rolling first crack @ 19.30 min
Dumped to cool at 20 mins, final weight 355gm roasted.

                    No Flash
                    With Flash

                    2nd Roast

300 gram roast of Sumatran that I bought from Pioneer Roastery.  Used the adapter ring & the towel.

Stabilizing pre roast for 4 minutes on 125 (unit was warm already)
Timer stuffed as I zerod it so the following times are best guess after I got it working again.
Temp dial set to 250 deg Celsius
First crack was @ 12 min
Rolling first crack @ 13 min
Backed off temp to 225 deg Celsius for 90 seconds after rolling first crack and back up to 250 deg
First snaps of second crack was observed @ 16.30 min/sec
Rolling first crack started @ 17.30 min
Dumped to cool at 18.30 mins , final weight 245gm roasted.

                    Green
                    No flash outside
                    With Flash Inside

The fan box worked a treat and the beans were cool in less than 3 minutes, bagged and hidden in the cupboard.

Also heres a few photos of the beans that I took when I got home after KKs demo of the KKTO.

So, any good for a 1st & 2nd roast? Im not sure if Im getting it right but they look about a CS9-10 to me.

Roasted some last friday - very nice indeed.

                          Re: Roasting with KKTO

Finally got to do another roast today.

I put the KKTO on a square of carpet and roasted 500gm Sumatra Mandheling Gr1 2009 from BB. Also I didnt use the adapter for this one.

Anyway heres the results, not sure this one went as well as the others.

Preheated roaster for 5 mins @250 deg Celsius
Stabilizing pre roast for 4 minutes on 125 deg Celsius
Zerod timer Temp dial set to 250 deg Celsius
First crack was @ 9 min
Rolling first crack @ 12-13 min
Backed off temp to 220 deg Celsius for 60 seconds after rolling first crack and back up to 250 deg Celsius
First snaps of second crack was observed @ 15.30 min/sec
Rolling first crack started @ 16.00 min
Dumped to cool at 16.15 mins , final weight 425gm roasted.

Seemed to go very quickly at the end... but I did have 2 kids in the background making a racket and its hard enough to hear the cracks as it is. How come kids always decided to turn the volume up when you really need them to be quiet?

Things moved along a lot quicker than I thought it would, but I did preheat the unit and I didnt use the adapter so I put it down to that. The roast doesnt seem that even and there was a fair bit of chaff.

So, any comments? Did I stuff this batch up... its certainly not as even as the previous beans I roasted.

You need to stretch out second crack to about 6 min from rolling FC
Or with the kids making noise you may have mistakenly thought you reached SC

Hearing the rolling RC & SC part with my untrained ears is probably the hardest part.

Is it normal for the roast to be so uneven? Should I have used the adapter ring???

I was trying to pull it a little earlier than last time to see how that would change the taste in the cup, but maybe I should just try to be consistent first. The kids definately didnt help. The "Daddy.... Daddy... I want this" started just as I need to concentrate on the roast. But finding and hour to myself is just impossible at the moment.
