Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
Re my post below: I reckon my CS card is fading if Im starting to refer to CS13 (which should be beyond charcoal). Its got a reddish tinge to all the shades on the card, so time to order another one. Take my comments back one CS shade each.
I was showing someone how to roast on my corretto last night, and I noticed that all the shades were one shade out from what I usually refer to.

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor/Mocha Java decaf
I havent done Wow yet, but expect quite good results when I do. I did my best ever decaf Mocha Java roasts on the Behmor first try around, and it far outweighed any corretto roasts of the same bean.
500g, 1lb,P2,C, pulled with 4:40 to go (for CS12) and 4:00 (for CS13), manually cooled. (This is where Ill start for Wow, altering the pull time by instinct.)
The CS13 batches I expected to toss, but was amazing! Deep, rich, lingering. The aromatics floating off the CS12 were beautiful. Received stacks of compliments from customers at a church camp where I supplied it as the house decaf, where I was serving the CS13, and the CS12 was snapped up by purchasers after one experimental inhalation and received rave comments afterwards. It was hands-down great.

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
Even more data... Another roast today:
Tried same as last time, but with C rather than B (in an attempt to get closer to 1st crack before the P2 program lowers the power), and this time fan-forced the cooling (pedestal fan directly into the door and held as close to door as possible). The drum was cool to touch within 3 minutes of the cooling cycle starting.
Details:
225g Decaf WOW, 1/2lb:P2:C (14:00).
1st Crack: 10m10s (3:50 on clock) but harder to discern this time.
Started manual cool 1m50 seconds later (2:00 left on clock) before 2nd Crack, opened door immediately, removed chaff tray and fan-forced - drum was cool within 3 minutes, but let cooling cycle finish properly (as per instruction manual).
Weirdly, despite using C it took longer to get to 1st crack this time, and the 1st crack was a bit indistinct. Could this be different voltage (hottish day today - maybe people had air conditioners on putting a load on the grid)?? Or humidity? Ambient temp wasnt much different than last time (one of the benefits of roasting indoors).
The beans werent quite as dark as last time - I guess because of the faster cooling.
Mass of beans after roasting was 195g.
Will now have to wait a few days to see how the beans taste in the cup...

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
Another roast (done just over a week ago), and so some more data for anyone interested:
225g Decaf WOW, 1/2lb:P2:B (13:00).
1st Crack: 9m31s (3:29 left on clock) clearer to hear than last time.
Deliberately started manual cooling at 11m21s (1m50s after 1st Crack) before 2nd crack could start and opened door immediately - range hood actually did manage to suck up most of the smoke.
At 5 days post-roast the flavour was really good (as a flat white - same grind etc as before). Different from the Mocha/Jave decaf, but really nice - better than the last roast. At this time the beans had also developed a lovely dark oily sheen.
The better result could have been due either to the faster time to 1st Crack or to pulling the beans before 2nd Crack...

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
Roasted some Decaf WOW on Saturday and tried it today. Behmor settings:
275g Decaf WOW, 1/2lb:P2:B (13:00).
1st Crack: 10m35s (2:25 on clock) rolling, but first couple of snaps occured about 30s previously.
2nd Crack: 12m25s (0:35 on clock), started manual cooling cycle and opened door after about a minute.
Tried drinking today (3 days post-roast - just storing the coffee in a non-airtight glass jar). Needed a fine grind (as did Mocha/Java decaf) - 3 on my EM0450, to get a 25s pour on my Sunbeam Ristretto (with DIY depressurised single basket). Not as strong or as caramelly as the Mocha/Java, but still very pleasant.
Next time Ill try 225g and hopefully get to 1st crack earlier and then pull the beans before 2nd crack...

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
Yes, I found that going from 125g to 250g extended the roast time nicely, and gave a little more time between 1st and 2nd crack.Originally posted by 455047434C4047434C220 link=1263640076/5#5 date=1263729746Possibly using smaller quantities may impact on the outcome

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
Thanks for that, might give it a go tomorrow night. We are finding that there is not much time between rolling 1st crack and being overdone. It seems no time for the flavour to develop. Possibly using smaller quantities may impact on the outcome.

Re: Decaf WOW on the Behmor
I havent tried Decaf WOW, but have done a Mocha/java decaf. I found the same as you, the flavour was very mild initially. However, I found that the flavour had improved a lot after four days, and I also found that I needed a very fine grind to get a good 25s extraction.Originally posted by 7D687F7B74787F7B741A0 link=1263640076/0#0 date=1263640076Just wondering if anyone else is trying out the Decaf WOW on the Behmor. We have roasted one batch so far, but not much body in the flavour. We roasted 1/4 pound on P2, and began cooling with one minute to go.Unlike our other roasts so far, it was not bitter, but was very mild flavoured.Any suggestions?

Its becoming quite annoying having to continuously complete conversions on the run to get an idea of what new Behmor owners are up to..... :P

Not that Im aware of Mal...
