  • Slowing speed of bread machine

    Hi all,

Just playing with my bread machine and wanting to slow the speed of rotations. After pulling the majority of it apart I now want to slow the speed of rotation.

It appears to be driven by a capacitor start motor that drives the stirrer using a band around a large gear. I think that changing the gearing isnt going to be very easy as would need to find exact match etc.

Any suggestions on slowing the speed down? Was thinking of using a fan controller from Bunnings or similar but not sure how that goes with the capacitor start motor. Any help would be really appreciated.

    Mike always playing

Has been stated many times before.. Fan and light dimmers / controllers are not ideal for this for many reasons.

Depending on the motor.. It is not always that simple if you also need the Motor Torque & Power Curve to be available.

Dont turn it on or plug into the gpo without it being tested..

After teh home attempt to fix a vac cleaner the other day that killed the guy.. QLD is going anal over backyard people playing with things...

    Assumptions kill.

      As per AM above....

Dont try it as it wont work as expected and may even result in your burning the motor out; Ive seen that happen any number of times but Im not going into the theory of why in this forum.

AC Motors derive their speed as a function of the number of poles in the Stator versus the mains Supply Frequency. There is therefore, only two ways to alter the speed.... Get a motor rewinder to rewind the motor to a greater number of poles (limited by the amount and quality of the iron in the stator and rotor cores) or buy a variable frequency motor drive. Neither option could be considered to be either cheap or practical but that would be up to you to decide....

You didnt say why you wanted to slow the speed.

I dont think its a good idea.
The slower the beans are stirred the more chance theyll burn.

Re: Slowing speed of bread machine

What Ive been playing around with is to try to increase my batch size from 600g up to 700-800g using my heat gun. Currently I dont have any real issues getting enough heat into my roasts but when I get above 600g I start to have agitation issues.

I believe its due to the bread pan being too small and unable to get good mixing after FC. So what I want to do is to create something similar to the KKTO setup (pasta/saucepan) using the bread machine to mix the beans and a heat gun to provide the power.

In the saucepan that Ive started with the agitation seems too much so I was thinking of reducing the rate. The more that I think about it, the more I think that I need to find a larger pasta pot prior to doing too much more.

Only constraint is that I only have about 400g of roasted coffee left so I need to get my roaster back on line! I think that Ill try a couple of op shops tomorrow.

I love that playing with this stuff combines both engineering (of sorts) and love of food!

Im not so sure that you want to slow the BM down....

My experience has been that after a year of torturing a Breville BB410 by pointing a heatgun @ 600 odd degrees at it 5 roasts a week, the motor slowed by itself....

I was getting great roasts, and I mean great...

All of a sudden I tipped beans out into my cooler and the bottom ones were not roasted - had not reached FC...

Process of elimination saw tightening the belt drive, followed by wedging down the agitator, followed by lowering the heatgun (thinking that the airflow from the HG was not sufficient) to a new heatgun for 110 bucks..........

            And, same problem...

I then got a long wooden spoon and assisted the agitation of the stirrer.... perfect!!

So the BM motor had slowed and though not audible or visible, it wasnt doing its job.

It took weeks, frustration and wasted money to work out...

I really doubt you want to slow down a BM as in our involuntary situation, it caused no end of grief.

I mentioned this on my original roaster design
One can use a heat gun as a heat source

I would also use a steel lid with a half moon cut out to better control heat

I feel that you wont need to alter the speed of the motor as the wider the roast/mixing chamber the slower the beans will mix

Re: Slowing speed of bread machine

Thanks KK, that is exactly what Im looking at doing. Slowing the speed seemed necessary with the size of pot that I started with but have decided that a larger pot is needed.

KK any chance of buying some insulation from you to cover it up?

                  Yes
Contact Barazi they have 6mm ceramic insulation rated @ 1200 deg C
