If this works well theres going to be a forum full of people feeling very silly about reinventing the roasting wheel for 10 times the price.
And if it doesnt and the result is similar to roasting in a rotating tin can, the same can be said here.
It is interesting how easy it is to make comments about products and processes without firsthand experience :

I made an espresso straight after cooling it and it tastes just like coffee that needs to degas for a few days.

There you go. Exactly what the copper one is purported not to do.

Having said that, when we all got together at Dennis today, we all said for $25 we would buy one anyway.

Ive got $25 worth of curiosity

Before you get too smug about it, I have since done a smaller roast - 175 grams - and that was pleasantly drinkable with a nice crema immediately post-roast.

What I have also found is that the AC motor will randomly go clockwise or anticlockwise. Anticlockwise can screw the pot loose from the coupling, so it is worth flicking the switch to make sure you are going clockwise.

Whichever way you approach it, stovetop roasting is a lot of fiddling around for piffling amounts of coffee.

        Mate,

Not getting smug about it at all...

It may work, it may not. As I said, I have $25 of curiosity potentially.

For me, the baby roaster is a sample roaster, not a piffling amount. It will give me heads up for what I need to look for in a larger roaster which hits the shores soon.

Sjay great scoop looks very interesting!! Im just thinking about the line up at the front door of CSs waiting to purchase their stove top roasters, & the look on the staffs faces with all these peopleasking about them.

I hate to say it, but I think that both yourself & Stan have taken my comment way too seriously. I too have built my own roaster, so count myself in the group reinventing the wheel. & had this done 500gm roasts I would have felt quite silly given sydney rd is only 5 minutes away.

I find it all too amusing that youre both happy to throw in your own feedback when I assume neither of you have experience with the roaster either :

Anyway, an interesting little device. I look forward to both your own & stans opinions once you have actually thrown in your $25

Weve had an edit, will delete my post.
For those who have PMd me regarding my deleted post, it was simply a comment on a couple of lines of red text in a previous post, the colour was changed within minutes so I deleted my comment, nothing of any consequence.

                    Oh... So nothing important

Dropped in to the shop and got two units.....

Cheep and nasty in many ways; however a great example of what other people and cultures have been using previously.

Further more, as a experiment; I recon the $25 is well spent for some one just starting out and wanting somthing a bit more than a popper... Have a young fellow in mind and I know he will be impressed... A budding and possiable future coffee shop / roaster in teh making.... Has already done a bit in the area of beers and brewing, so this is the next step in his future.

If anyone can provide photos of any of the alternative styles mentioned that they have on offer, it would be appreciated.
Ill have to start hunting around Adelaide, otherwise call on a friend in Melbourne to visit the store.....

                        Hurray for me, first post..........

                          Re: $25 Stovetop Roaster

                          Hi CSrs,

I hope no one sees red here but could anyone with current electrical knowledge advise on electrical safety issues?
Would a 3 core power lead and earth be an improvement on the motor drive model?
I love the simple rustic elegance of these units.
                          On the design itself:
                          - a HG hole cut in the lid would allow additional heat (from HG) to be used as desired and also enable the chaff to be dispersed during roasting.
                          - a shroud to confine the hot gases close to the roast chamber and protect from cooling draughts may improve efficiency.
Then we would have a serious sample roaster but limited simple rustic elegance.

                          Lindsay

                            SHIZEN!!!!

I just enslaved myself to my workmates    to get on a truck heading out to Sydney Rd (Im a firey) to try and snap up one of these roasters....

.....and theyre all gone!!!  Someone had come in and bought the last 3 this morning.  He said he will get some more soon.

He couldnt believe that everyone wanted a roaster all of a sudden!!   :

YES.. Had a look and would not even consider plugging in... Lead is cheep from china and the switch is basic but will get ya big time if it fails...

(NEW lead and insulation and EARTH fitted ASAP).
Back yard and dodgy brothers  -  but the concept is great.....

Now what was the Vic Electrical safety authority ph number ????

                              ********
A motor with the next speed up may or may not be needed... (bay of many options)

May scale down the mixing steps inside......  But for 150 - 200 g it is fine....

Love the counter weight and that I can change the angle or the dangle  and move the pot in OR out ;D

The young guy is going to love this...
