I made an espresso straight after cooling it and it tastes just like coffee that needs to degas for a few days.
As a followup, that first roast of Wahgi is absolutely splendid after a week.

Due to some serious off-topic rants the "debate" about aluminium has been moved from this thread to off topic.

        Excellent.

I too think the sparkie side of this is looking pretty dangerous but if it can be improved (and standards/safety approved) then the first results sound very promising.

Thanks for your effort in posting up great pics and a running report ajay!

I agree that the electrical side of things in this design is seriously scary.

Id suggest it needs to use a 12V motor and transformer. No use roasting it if youre not gonna be around to drink it  :-?

Yep... I made it safer with a quick mod; but a touch more thought and all can be good without spending a mass of $$$.

For me it was partly the engineering concept that I liked....  I Bought a Rotisserie with a cage and it was OK... But I had to wire out the thermostat.... To allow it to get hot enough for beans...

A: Once the  internal ally shield was removed the electrical safety was there but not great..  What the eye does not SEE   ;D

B: Thus it was expensive and too hard to mod for general use.

It now does all my roasted chillies and capsicum and does them well.

The stove top roaster is Simple...  AND importantly can be modded with ease and maybe expanded upon.

A: A Copper or SS bowl of your choice  ;D

B: A 12 V / 24V  or even better still; an old wind up motor and gearbox to drive the unit.

              OR

C:  Make a crank and do it by hand...   Roasting while camping on a gas stove  8-)

At the end of the day it is yet another approach people have used to roast nuts.....

AND I bet the old original ones from Syria etc would be worth a packet to a collector  OR look great on the bench...   After all, roasted coffee started in that general area well before we got involved.

Any udate result roasting with this machine.
I believe lots of CSers in Melbourne got hand on this toy.

Wanna know is it worth the value?

                Thanks,
                C.

                  Re: $25 Stovetop Roaster

I found that 5RPM was too slow and got too much tipping and variation even with a lot of shaking.

I modded mine with a 30RPM 12volt motor (~$10) and a 1amp transformer ($4.50) from ebay.  I added in the original switch, soldered it up and its working fantastically. Im getting great consistent even roasts.

One other mod, was to drill a small (~5mm) smoke vent hole in the lid.  It works quite well and helps when you are roasting by sight, sound (and smell to a lesser extent).

Shes a wee ripper... 8-)  Ill pull my finger out and get some pics up after the next roasting sesh.

                    That sounds great, Dewy.

I have been thinking of upgrading the motor too. Is it what they describe as a High Torque Gear Box Electric Motor?

What quantity are you doing? Some pics would be great.

                    cheers

Just bumping a 2 year old thread...

I manage to grab the roaster listed under Pay It Forward, offered by "friskhr". Much appreciated

It was pretty cool to use. At the same time, I didnt really have any idea what was happening inside the chamber in terms of heat and any visual cues. I just had to go by gut feel and the cracking noises.

I dont know how fast it actually spins, but if it's 4.5RPM then I think it's definitely fit for purpose.

I did 200g and that went for about 18 minutes. It hit 2nd crack as I was pouring it into a colander. Here are some photos I took.

Here's another link a found while I was googling for this topic: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/roasters/1...r-roaster.html

One just sold on eBay the other week for $72 bucks...

Might go into business on a return like that
