Bosch PGH 630 DCE
My trusty $10 Kmart HG has given up. :-[
Lasted for 31 Roasts and now gone to land fill.
Bought a Bosch PGH 630 DCE….$99.00 at Bunnings. Nov 2011.
What sold me was the LCD temp display and temp settings in 10degC increments.
(50 deg C to 630 Deg C). And 3 air setting. Although only the full on (#3) setting is really useful.
I wanted to be able roast to 1C at a higher temp then drop temp and a slower finish to 2C.
Well things don’t always go to plan.
The problem is this HG has thermo protection that works, maybe just a little too well (to protect the unit??) and was a problem. After a few minutes at 550 Deg C the HG made a ‘slowing of the fan’ sound and the temp dropped down about 100degC then picked up again and repeated this a few times. Problem appears to be hot air rising from BM and being sucked into HG inlets and the unit sensed a problem and lowered temp (probably to protect itself).
So I had to do a few mods.
Protect the HG from the rising air with a swimming pool light lens (aquaquip brand – good quality plastic that can take some heat) and a small $10.00 100mm metal fan from Mitre10 mounted just above HG and distributing cooler air over the HG inlets.
Ran for 10 minutes no probs.
Fan OFF…Temps get lowered by thermo protection.
Fan ON…no probs just keeps on pumping out at 550 deg C.
HG does not appear to overheat and hopefully will not give any probs.
Will post outcome if it does.
One side benefit is that the chaff from roasting does not go anywhere near the HG air inlets now.
Has anyone else had similar issues??
At this early stage I am not unhappy with my purchase of this HG but suppose it would have been easier without the mod. Being able to set accurate temps I think/hope will bear fruit in the cup. And that’s the bottom line, even if the Roastery is beginning to look a bit like the Beastery.

I use a small fan from behind the heatgun to blow the chaff the away from the air intake.
I am surprised that you have to have the temp set so high.
I usually start at about 400°C and the highest I have to go is about 440°C. (I use the datalogger as well).
My heatgun is about the same height from the top of the breadmaker as yours.
The biggest difference is that I have a cover covering about 4/5ths of the top. (I still dont remember having to run the temp so high before doing this)
The fan and a cover may do the trick for you.

My previous no name HG was a 2000watt unit and I think that the temp set at 500 deg C will give me as before. Time will tell. Still need to do a few roasts to get the feel for new setup. 500 deg C to 1C then 400 deg C to 2C or just before depending on beans. That will be my approach till something else changes. Like winter/summer.
Any chance of a look at some of your profile data files ??
I did a test with a temp cover and it was so different to what I was used to that I decided to leave it as I am happy with current results. Always good to learn.

If you need a new HG consider the Bosch PGH 630 DC Heat Gun.
There is a reason they cost more.....There is more inside.
Reliable and consistant in output.
Have had one for about a year now and just did 2 roasts with a 1.9degC diff in start temp.
Have a look at the 2 temps as they rise with the same settings to 1C.... "consistant and replicable"
After 1C the situation changes.....
And that is what you need to do reliable roasting..
