    Re: The (KJM) Toddler Roaster...

    hello all,

Long time lurker 1st time post so be gentle.  Currently roasting with a turbo oven on a large piece of wire mesh to even out the roast(No mods) works quite well.  I would love to try my hand with one of these but cant figure out where to buy one of these in Melbourne for $25/35.  If its not against any rules please post where we can find them so this obsession can become pathalogical....PLEASE

Thanks--- tomorrow off to see if this is in stock & can match/better the results of the turbo--which are pretty good

Cripes - Im mortified I didnt ever see that thread :-[ This is basically just a manual crank version of the electric one. And I think the manual option is kind-of better (modulo the steam burn potential!).

Are you the reason that they had sold the last one yesterday? >

Yes that was my fault.  I got the last powered one-there was no manual toddler in stock, they also had a different mannual one there which looked a lot more rustic but looked as if it could do the business.  I have only done one 200gram batch which wasnt the best but then there is always a learning curve to go along with this obsession.  Im doing this inside on the stovetop and can say that it is not that messy

I have to say Im impressed. Id be cheerfully referred to as the late KJM if I did that here While this thing does not spray chaff everywhere, the smoke.. ;D!!

I find the smoke seems to be somewhat absorbed by the steam which coats your hand (the one cranking ) and everything it touches. While a quick wash of the hands after using the Gene is fine, it seems to take an age to get the smell off me when using the "toddler". Getting Mrs. KJMs kitchen smelling like roasting coffee... thats something I would prefer to avoid ;D

Block off the hole in the shaft inside the "Toddler" with a dome nut, a self tapper of the appropriate size or even roll up a piece of alfoil & plug into the shaft.
There are probably other suitable ways to do it depending on what is in the junk box. If you block the other end I think the shaft could fill with some condensation.
Then drill a hole in the lid so the steam coming out is well away from your cranking hand. Just need to be careful when removing the lid but much easier and safer to manage

                    Re: The (KJM) Toddler Roaster...

Ok, I have done about 10-15roasts(all harar/sidhamo) in the powered toddler all at 200g except 1 which was 250.  The results are 1st crack at around 12-13min and second big rolling crack at 16-17min.(Times not that important as heat source will vary) When pulled the beans look almost burnt and wet but after cooling are very drinkable but still slightly wet/oily.  I pulled my 1st bacth at 14 mins and tasted lots of choc, toffee but not enough oomph so took it further.  Very happy and pleased with the result as are others who always complain after they purchase a coffee externally!!

Now to the next variation, today at the same heat level did a batch without the lid. 1st Crack 17 min and pulled at 24min(Yes I know about the baked theory but will test first as the general rules seem not to apply here).  Surprisingly it looked like the first batch i did with the lid at 14 min and not that dark at all.  Both convective and conductive??

Cant thank everyone enough for the guidance and finding this particular roaster is absolutely awesome.  I wouldnt have paid more than $50 to test all this but the flavor this thing puts out is amazing( Not really the operator I fear!!)

Ill post back on the results without lid and then increase heat to bring the times down.

Great to know people are getting great results from a roasting machine that is very affordable, and a whole heap of fun.

                          Hi all,
just wondering if anyone has done a direct comparison with the baby roaster??

Does the toddler give the same post roast gas free cupping as the baby?

                          Cheers

Sorry - been a bit busy lately so I didnt see this till now.

The answers are yes & yes :

Basically identical in time and technique to the Baby, but it does hold a bit more. The roasts basically behave the same - so they are quickly consumable : :

Thanks Kevin, a very good $25 worth...
Have since done a few roasts and it is easier than the baby in some ways as you can take the lid off and see what is going on at the business end of the roast...
                              Great find!
                              Cheers

Ive not found a source in Brissie for these as yet.
