Re: Seeking Coffee Roaster
I have a hottop Ill be selling for under 1k in the next two weeks (Will be listed in hardware for sale), brilliant machine for honing the subtleties associated with roasting. This will roast between 250-300g of coffee at a go and is a great place to start.

Re: Seeking Coffee Roaster
Hi Sam,
At 2-3kg per week, youre honestly wasting your time unless you can sell it at $100/kg. You need only to do the math.
Id give up the idea of mucking around for your cafe and instead, see if you can source small quantities of interesting origins from your regular roaster or perhaps even a CS sponsor.
If you want to learn, invest in one of the many small domestic roasters, play and learn at home and you never know, it may develop into something bigger.
In a cafe, unless youre contemplating a minimum of a 5kg gas roaster or perhaps a set and forget solution like a solar autoroast, the numbers will simply never add up regardless of what small solution you employ.

Perhaps we should let the OP Sam to reply with more detailsOriginally posted by 45686C606D010 link=1302315909/11#11 date=1302591827I dont think that is what Den is referring to KK....
Pretty sure Den is suggesting that for such a small amount of coffee, the OP would be much better off in selecting one of our many prize-winning professional roasters blends. That way, there is no need to outlay any capital until such time as needs dictate...
Thats my take anyway....
Mal.
One would agree that his information so far is a little thin on the ground
At present he is looking at small home style roasters
I personally think that for such a small amount of coffee (2 to 3 kg per week) it would be far more cost effective to buy the finished product from a roaster

Sam at 2 to 3kg per week, you will wow your customers much more by using an excellent, commercially roasted coffee that is well prepared, than bragging rights because you roast your own.
1) Has the room
2) Wants to spend many thousands of dollars

Re: Seeking Coffee Roaster
In a small cafe or coffee outlet setting you probably wont have the time to dedicate to a manual roaster so I would definitely suggest you get a machine that is as hands off as possible. I think you might find that Coffee-Techs Solar Autoroast would fit the bill admirably. It has a very small footprint, is famed for the consistancy and ease of its roasts and looks pretty nice too. It will cost a bit but then again so does a good coffee machine.
Another alternative is the Sonofresco / Greenbean roaster in 600g and 1.2 kg versions. This is a gas fired fluid air bed roaster whereas the Solar is an electric drum roaster.
Both would suit the cafe environment and the task at hand and are available here in Au.

He may just want to trial the idea first before committing big cash and theres nothing wrong with that
Just to clarify I was responding to Sams post where he stated the machines he enquired about

Re: Seeking Coffee Roaster
Gday again SamOriginally posted by 3F383C333B312434333A5D0 link=1302315909/7#7 date=1302573192There has been several recent threads on Behmor compared to Hottop to the Gene and also consider the KKTO at 2-3kg (USE the Search function here). All of them are really different roasters with weak and strong points and of course the one people own is always the best
My KKTO design has the highest payload of up to 700 grams or 800 grams for experienced users
Higher payloads also equate in less electricity cost per roast and less labour time
As a shop owner would you want to be roasting all day with multiple loads ?
Sam it takes approx 30 min including prep & cooling time per roast
Its simply the best value coffee roaster that consistently produces quality roast results
Decision is yours

best thing might be is tell us where you are and try and get along to look at one or more options in the flesh

I am going to assume that you are a cafe owner and a small roaster may be anything from a 1 kg to 10 kg roaster

Re: Seeking Coffee Roaster
Perhaps some sort of guide to how many Kg a week you are using would be a start.
a Behmor is about $400 but if it would be subtable I have no idea.
in the scheme of things it may be sipler to find a good commercial roaster (company) that can look after that part of the business. After all you cant do everything yourself.
small roasting as a hobby is good fun but can you make good money from it?
