USB cables can run 15 meters without an "extender" so that should be long enough to get your roaster outside and your PC inside (or just use a laptop)

Am I the only geek that finds this concept appealing?
    Hi All,

Wouldnt a USB-Wireless comms link setup remove the need to drape cable around the place, short of owning a notebook of course? Seem to be some very clever USB comms devices around these days.

    Cheers,
    Mal.

Sure could Mal, the other option would be bluetooth but I expect it would add anything up to $50 to the price of making something "hard wired".

...which may or may not matter with a $1000 toy ;D

    Glad you agree Java!

I cannot see it would add much to the cost at all and would improve the result and usability of a home roaster (ergo the enjoyment too)

Boris is right, the price is currently about twice what would seem fair but I would pay that amount for a PC driven one.

We could be putting downloadable "roast profiles" up on coffeesnobs and Javaphile in the USA could roast some beans to the same profile as someone in Sydney.

I guess the perfect interface would read humidity and ambient temp and adjust to suit.  Sounds like a project!

    w3.patentoffice....

I think it was Wired that is currently using a hottop here, and last I read it was working well. It will be interesting to see his current thoughts about this roaster.

Im curious why none of these roasters have a USB cable to interface with your PC... that way you could computer control the roast profile, monitor and graph the temp and maybe end-up with a great little database of what worked and what didnt all without typing.

Ive been wondering the same thing there Andy. Its not like it would be hard for them to add. They need to move into the new century and get with the (pardon the pun) program.

    YEP. ;D

Seriously, thats the sort of thing I would be interested in buying (would have to drop in price a little, ok at least half).

Nice find. I was looking at the hottop site earlier in the week and didnt see this.

The digital appears to replace the 7 or 9 LEDs that were there.

Do you know if it is smarter or more programable?
