Re: New roaster (600k of photos)

    Guys,

Just wondering about the 12v battery + charger idea.

I use a wiper motor for my BBQ setup and I just clip the charger clamps right onto the wires for the motor. Ive been doing this for a year now with no issues (apart from "Dont get the wires the wrong way around!"). It never stops or cuts out, so Im not sure why it is happening for AndyCJ (perhaps the wiper has set itself to intermittent )

It just depends on your motor and charger. My motor wants to draw 7 or 8 amps, but my charger only supplies 4, so I need the battery to supply the difference.

        Good advice all!

The wiper is definatly not on intermittent, its running continuiously for 30 or so turns, then stopping. Im pretty sure that the charger thinks its charged up the battery fully, and is stopping (some cutout type thing). But Ill definatly get a regular battery before I do anything else.

Im using about 400g of beans Mark, so I think Ill try adding in another 100g and seeing what happens then. But I see what you say about the bar being too low also, you wouldnt want one hugh lump of beans wirring around. Ill work on that next weekend I think - but the solution (as Nunu suggested) will probably start with a "skirt" to lower the arm. Will check the arm height with 500 and go from there.

Still not sure about the heatgun... not sure if I should just go ahead and cut the hole, or if I should try for some "extension pipe", itd need to be snug, so Im not sure what to use. Which reminds me to check the heatgun against the vacume cleaner hose!!! Better go see if I can raid yet another household appliance!!!

... the search continues... (thanks again everyone)

In re the shape of the blades you might also consider making them curved as is used in the cooling beds of the larger commercial roasters. Those cooling beds are designed to do the same thing youre doing except theyre looking to remove heat while youre trying to add it. The principle remains the same in either case.

Here ya go. This type of arrangement seems to be pretty common with the exception of the plate at the end of the left arm. Ive not seen that on others.

Re: New roaster (600k of photos)

Unreal Java - Im definatly going to implement something like that. It sort of stirs towards the centre, then sweets back to the outside. Ill have to try something like that, but with a little less style.

I actually cranked it out tonight, and gave it a go! But it sucked because I am an idiot :-? I had the engine on the fast setting, so I was cranking about 60RPM. After about 25minutes nothing much was going on, so I cracked it out and did the rest "regular" heatgun style.

I then thought... gee that seems to be stiring fast... I wonder what I could do.... so I tried another one of the leads... and realised I had the motor on FAST! IDIOT :

So next time (after the stirrer mod on the weekend) Ill be able to do a roast thatll work... ALL THE WAY THROUGH!

Remember that this setup is designed with the beans being a lot deeper than the vanes are high. If the vanes are higher than the beans are deep it may very likely just move them around with-out really mixing them up very much.

I hear that - Ill be doing a single vein sweeping the beans outward toward the heatgun, then see how that goes with a roast. Then maybe do another one moving the out again if its necessary.

Playing with a single layer is definatly harder... and great fun messing about with ideas too I think. Thats the whole point for me... almost.... MMMmmm coffee!
