Re: Gene Cafe CBR-101 Review (was Genesis i Rosto)

    Hi all.
I ask if you use external cooling system for the Gene Cafe.
I use a old Miele 900W vac,and a cooling pan, which I bought from USA, trying to cope with the different diameters of pipes.
The question is, have you any exerience from this external cooling, because I think that 900W is low power for this task, because I need over 4 minutes to lower the temperature.
    I hear your say please.

      Hi Theodore.
External cooling systems are used by many, not just Gene users.

I currently use an old industrial vac connected to a bucket with a colander on top.
It cools 600g of beans in less than 2 minutes.

What is this cooling pan of yours and how is the Miele connected to it?

It is this, http://www.u-roast-em.com/cooling-pan.html, which I bought, without the dedicated vac, putting on my old Miele.
I connected them, putting the vac pipes, in contact with a small, protruding pipe, from the down side of the pan, with the same diameter, to the vac pipe, having difficulties in connecting them.
I ask again, what is the Wattage, of your industrial vac, because, if mine is too low, I buy another vac, with over 2000W.
        Regards.

Theodore, 4 minutes its plenty fast enough, you dont need a new vacuum cleaner.

Do you agitate the beans while cooling? Try stirring them if you dont, it will make a significant difference.

I use the Gene Cafe as well and enjoy every bit of it. It is really good you can adjust the temperature very accurately, since it is important for the quality, tast and health aspects as well. I saw some info on the web that we should try to keep the temperature below 220ºC / 448ºF, to avoid the creation of PACs. Those are not very healthy
I now use 215ºC for 21 minutes, giving great results and being on the safe side! Check this link: (and see other benefits as well   )

mod edit- commercial link removed. Please observe site sales and posting policy

            ciao,

              Looks dubious to me.

Please describe the "great results" you get at this setting, and
how it performs as espresso. How far into SC did you get with
              this technique?

My Gene Cage, possibly the second ever in Australia after Andys, soon started to take longer and longer to roast. What as taking 17.5 mins soon dragged out to 25 or so. I sent it to the Aus dealers who replaced the elements quickly, and from memory for a fairly low cost.

All was good, until.... the times started creeping out again. I think last night I stopped it at 26 minutes which I feel is too long compared the the original 17.5 or so.

Its an otherwise great machine and has produced over 200 roasts to date, but curious to see if other owners have noticed this pattern??

                    Thanks,

Both of mine have done a good 100kg each without fault...

The Gene finally died - so given it had been fixed once I decided to send it to the appliance graveyard. Now replaced with a Hottop Roaster. Did like the simplicity of the Gene, but I think I just wore it out

                          Hi

Dont throw it out. Our society already is very quick to throw out consumer items like PCs and many other whitegoods. Many users here have Genes and a source of 2nd hand spares might be useful to many. A Gene is quite simple and in some cases very repairable. I know that the gears in mine are starting to make a noise so are wearing out (they are plastic after all) but they havent failed yet. Some ppl here might need a heater element, a motor or a plastic gear. Perhaps store it away or place it on the hardware section as freebie to someone.

                          Mike

Just got our Gene from Avacuppa (thank you!); our prize in the 10000 Snobs comp.

First impressions? Its light, its neat, its quiet, produces a perfect 250g bagful, disposes of chaff beautifully. It was so no-fuss I couldnt believe it was doing anything to the beans except they were slowly but surely changing colour.

The only worry is the amount of greens were going to go through and the amount of coffee were going to drink!

I remember being able to read the Saturday paper on the verandah while roasting with the Gene Cafe.... with the popper all I could ever do was roast.

Now Snobman can be saving the world while roasting!

Or like the rest of us, it just gets consumed by a wider group of friends who "saw the light on, just dropped-in for a cuppa".
