Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Well I do have a roast profile programmed in using the ramp/soak function...but at the moment Im content to learn by just adjusting the PID manually.

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Hey David, are you using the ramp/soak function at all, or are you just setting the PID to a temperature?

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Ive done 500 grams....Im sure I can go higher. 500 grams is less than 1/4 of the drum full. For my consumption needs....Im not sure if I need to go higher...

Hi David
This sound pretty good, congratulation.
Which quantity could you roast at the time!
Im amazed to see what people can do to build a roaster :

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Hi Serge,
There is not much smoke at all, so there is no need for an extractor fan. The gap between the door and the oven is sufficient.
The chaff falls out of the drum and stays on the bottom of the oven. Some of it incinerates if it touches the oven elements. Very easy to clean chaff away.
To control the degree of roast I use the PID to change the temperature. The digital multimeter with datalogging feature is connected to a k-type wire type thermocouple that is located very near to the drum, but not in the bean mass itself.
The temperature inside the roaster can get to any temperature I set it to. 250+ if I want to burn my beans
Cheers,
David

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Hi Wushoes!
This is a great modification and the drum is very well done
I have few questions for you.
Does your roaster smoke a lot and do you have an extractor fan!
What about the chaff inside the drum!
How can you control the degree of roasting!
And what is the temperature inside the roaster!
Have a great day.
Serge

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Wushoes pimped out Mistral Bellini Oven.
http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1168154311
Modifications:
1) Replaced mechanical thermostat with Fuji PXR4 PID Controller
2) Hardwired the AC synchronous (rotisserie) motor to always be on, on all element settings.
3) Home fabricated a drum with hatch for easy bean dumping
5) DMM datalogging thermocouple installed.

Hard to believe there are still only 12 people using the Breadmaker/HG to roast with. Oh well.
But there you go.

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Lionrock,
this site http://www.unionroasters.com/ourworld.asp will give you a lot of info about different processing etc, but maybe not about the specific beans you have. You could also try www.sweetmarias.com who also have a lot of really interesting and useful information.

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Ive done about 5 roast on the GC now, loving it, where I work we are all Flat White drinkers so that may explain our darker roast preferences compared to those above. I basically followed the tips on the sweetmarias website, I crank the GC upto 250 (it never reaches that temp), put the time to about 25min ( I always start cooling before then). I always roast 240g, My best tasting roast so far has been 50 % Mexico Chiapas, 25% Guatemala Huehuetenango, 25% Sumatra Gayoland, roast time 19 min, top temp 240 degrees (full bodied with nice chocalate undertones), guys in the office think Im tripping re the chocolate, they just like the free coffee. I too cant hear the cracks, I think I may have heard the second one once at about 15 mins, Im basically roasting by preferred colour. Im just sourcing my green beans from the local trade aid shop, Id love to know more about the beans, when they were harvested, how they were processed etc., but enquiries have only responded in vague responses, that seems to be the unknown part that could hold up long term consistency. Enjoying the blending, waiting to find that blend that will blow everyone away so that I can quit my job, buy a 15kg roaster, and cruise by the beach.

Thats the spirit ;DOriginally posted by Coffeechaser link=1134076855/60#69 date=1162950221. The way my crazy popper goes I could probably get a roast in whilst the corretto is warming up ;D

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Now there is a novel idea!Originally posted by marcstolk link=1134076855/60#67 date=1162947889Brett, just start the roasting after 3 mins ;-)
That is my plan, I bought it not knowing whether I would need to modify it or not. 3 minutes of pulsing doesnt really worry me. Just means I need to switch it on and set everything else up in the 3 minutes than I am ready to go. The way my crazy popper goes I could probably get a roast in whilst the corretto is warming up ;D

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?
Is there a way for us to list which models are ok. :-/ Maybe a new thread where only one person can add a model to a single post. That way a quick glance will provide a good starting point for people to start looking, rather than having to read pages of posts.
