Re: What do YOU use to home roast?

Wow - another 5 BM/HG Corretto roasters and well be able to describe it as the third most popular home roasting method in the largest australian home roasting community.

I still think the bottom Breadmachine choice should be

      "Breadmachine with Heatgun"

I feel the term "Breadmachine" can be misleading, especially to new roasters, visitors etc.

We shouldnt give the "bread machine" any more air play. Change the poll option to "Coretto", it isnt a bread machine after you drill a hole in the pan and attach a thermocouple!

Maybe Bread Machine w/ Heat Gun aka Corretto, would be appropriate?

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?

It really should be called a Corretto if we are going to use this poll in the Wikipedia argument - we cant really claim that its a well known thing here if we explain it instead of using its name.

Perhaps call it Corretto (Adapted bread machine with heat gun) ?

After looking through all these amazing inventions, I am a bit confused - so where do you start if you are totally novice and have absolutely no skills in modifying stuff?? What is the best, simple (pref afordable!) system on the market (or where can I find it out?). Am sick of running out of roasted beans! Ta!

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?

Popcorn maker is super easy and also the least controlable. The only mod you would need to do is a suitable can for a chimney. Heat gun and dog bowl (new one!) is also easy just means you will need to stir constantly. Heatgun is probably a good way to go as you can use it WHEN you decide to use breadmaker to stir it. I started with a popper but am now going to the corretto (heatgun and breadmaker).
Is all good fun though no matter what way you start with I think.

Re: What do YOU use to home roast?

In my opinion, the best, most affordable way to start is the popcorn popper. Its the way I started, and you can start for $20 plus the cost of some green beans. The mistral poppers are fine, I think my current one came from KMart or BigW. The only issue to address is beans coming out the chute. I started by catching them in a sieve and tossing them back in, but this got tiresome pretty quick. A can or exhaust tip to stick in the top really saves a lot of hassle, and you probably have a can of some description in the cupboard that will fit well.

                      Gday needmycoffee,
You mentioned before that you were past the KRUPS, what did you get?
Id love to know your grinder choice too!
My kids are past the toddler stage physically, with a role model like me I think they may never pass Lacans Mirror.
                      Cheers

Looks like needmycoffee has gone way past the Krups, Expobar Minore and Iberital grinder. Very fancy indeed. I made a change from a Krups to Expobar (but office semi-auto) and Iberital. So clearly needmycoffee has good tastes.

Ok OK I only looked at the last 10 posts!

                          Got me :

So you have the Hardware needmycoffee. I think you should butcher the Bread Machine and grab a heat gun, you will be amazed!

The popper is quick, easy and cheap.
                            Good for running out emergencies.

Having said that, my breadmaker is still on the way.

Yes, Im very lucky, some very nice equipment indeed - shame I havent maximised its power yet!!
Thanks for the above, maybe I should steal the breadmaker I gave the mother in law that she has never used... Are there good, easy (I am NOT a handy person) instructions somewhere for these mods? You guys make it sound easy... Also, what do you all think about the fancy purpose built roasters on the market? Worthwhile or not??? Something to aspire to?

The only essential requirement is for the motor of the BM to turn the paddle (in dough cycle) for about 20 minutes. Some do this "out of the box" others require a mod which is the installation of a switch to run the motor for that time (someone who has electronics skills or an electrician would be needed to do that).

The other thing Id recommend is removing the teflon from the paddle - couple of minutes work with some steel wool.

Fitting of temp probes etc - although handy - is not an essential mod.

I reakon the BM is as good as the small purpose built roasters (roast quality) but can roast more beans than the small roasters..... and costs the best part of $1000 less
