... where do people sit their bowls?
I had mine propped inside a cardboard drink box to elevate it, but being curved it occasionally tilted.
Do people place them on the ground?
Thats one reason I decided to use a stainless steel saucepan. It has a flat bottom and a handle to hold if needed. I stand on my verandah and sit the pan on my bbq plate which makes it just the right height to stand and stir, etc.

The other reason was that I already had the saucepan. If I was going to use a bowl I would have had to go out & buy one.

      I already had the bowl.

However, I bought a new one today.
It has a straight sides from half way up.

My wiper motor now works after finding an old 12v power pack with enough grunt (850mA).

I have my HG and will be attaching it to the pedestal fan pedestal.

All will be revealed in due course.

For now I will just tease and say mine will be a little different to other motor driven units.
The difference will be revealed at the unveiling.

At the moment I use a Sunbeam Popcorn roaster, but am getting a little ticked off at the waiting for it to cool before the next batch can be put in, and the small amount I can roast at any one time.

I hope this is the right place to ask a question such as this, but can anyone reccomend one I can buy that is between $150 and $500 for home use. I want one that can do up to around 200gms at a time if one is around like that.

          Cheers

Do you mean a big, honking popcorn roaster? If not, it sounds like youre ready to upgrade to the wonderful world of heat guns and a corretto - Im sure Mal will give you some great advice with it!

Yes, would be nice if Mal would give me some advice, but also, been looking at these Gene Café machines, rather impressive, but so are the prices of this machine, but it makes for rather interesting reading as to what it can do.

Im open to any suggestions, so please, one and all, give it to me ....... ;D

                Understood smoky.
I thought Id be happy with my popper for quite some time but have found that 100g at a time isnt really practical.
3 batches to fill a 250g bag takes about an hour now that Ive managed to extend the popper roast times to 15 minutes.

So Ive progressed to a bowl and heatgun soo I can roast 300g in one go.

As Dennis said, a breadmaker and heat gun (Corretto) is well within you stated budget.

In my case Ive decided to add a motor to my bowl but the breadmakers already have a motor and stirring device, you just have to add the heat from the heatgun and youre away.

Youll find plenty of info in other threads to help you.

Sounds like a good idea Thundergod, but expense is my question, as by the time you buy a bread machine and a heat gun, would it not be around the cost of a Gene Café, which Ive found as low .... as $740.

Need to convince better half with a lot of data about the different types before making a monetary commitment... :

2nd hand breadmaker for under $50.

Good heatgun for $50 to $100.

                    Drill Press from Bunnings $12.

Under $740 easy Id say ;D

Yes plenty of threads on this about the place.

                      Gee,

300 grams in an hour.... Ive done about a Kilo in that time :P. Actually Smoky, if you do a search for threads on Corretto roasters youll turn up a wealth of information. Even though I got in on the act pretty early on in the piece, there are plenty of others who have done much more with their setups than I have.... Mine is still pretty basic by comparison .

The Search tool is your friend 8-)

Point taken Belinda, yes, it has me going out this week to look for a 2nd hand bread maker, only trouble I can see, and know where I can get a good heat gun for a good price, dont have a Bunnings out in this dump, but sure I can pick one of those stands up for around that price; yes, sounds like a good idea indeed...........

Smoky, you also need to consider a few other factors - eg. how your personality matches your roasting technique

I found a popcorn maker was just too slow for me and didnt produce anywhere near what I needed. It can be mesmerising to the point of making you dizzy!

The HG, colander, and balloon whisk method is great - I like roasting beans with this way because it is so tactile and you have quite a lot of control re the results. I never upgraded to a BM so cant comment there

The Gene is terrific, and though the initial outlay is high, i can see it paying itself off many times over - very even, decent sized roasts that you can just about walk away from, and some people do...then again, I find I come back toward the end of the roasting process just to make sure Im satisfied with the colour and because...I like to watch
