Great New roasting course - Qld

Hi all - just a quick review on a new roasting course/s available on the Gold Coast. Put together by Coffee Roasters Australia and Go.Barista, you can attend either a home roasting or commercial roasting course. We attended the home roasting course for $90 over about 3hrs.

The course was presented by Serge (please forgive my spelling if incorrect!) from Go.Barrista and assisted by Les from Coffee Roasters Aust. Serge has had 35 years as a professional roaster and learnt his craft from his roaster father in France. Serges passion for coffee and roasting was evident from the start and set us for a great experience.

The course focused on a range of issues relevant to roasting and blending starting including:
- why roast
- types of roasts
- roasting methods
- different approaches and their origins
- very comprehensive discussion of growing regions and the various types of beans, roasting guides and blending guides
- different extraction methods with pros and cons

Finally we ended doing a few blended roasts in the new I-Roast 2 and were presented with our roasts and comprehensive folders to take home. While there we were able to wander around and check out a variety of roasting machines and chat with Les & Serge re the various features and costs etc.

Overall - Serges experience and enthusiasm were brilliant for anyone interested in roasting (we even had a good discussion on the merits of the humble popcorn popper!) - and he and Les were great hosts for the morning.

Re roasting - I felt I had access to a wealth of knowledge and experience and gained fresh insight into bean types and roasting styles that had me heading for crazy popper the moment I got home. Highly recommend for any coffee snob!
