Interesting idea there Presso. Do you leave the lid up when youre roasting though? Otherwise itd be impossible to hear the cracks ....... and see the roast too.

    Pictures, we need pictures :-)

Yeah I thought I would decomission the view window and drill a hole saw size chunk outta the plastic and insert my noisy vacuum cleaner nozzle. 8-)

No youre right, I took it off after my test run.

I am currently contemplating modifying the lid to accomodate a vacuum and the heat gun. Rather than opening the lid at the first crack, just make some more noise! ;D

    You mean the original lid?

Or the extension to the HG?

Ok Im here, Ive taken the plunge, Ill add my vote to the poll

Glad to see youve come over to the dark side Presso :-)

Although I never found that particular HG extension (in your photo) to work very well. I much pefer the HG without any extensions.

    Thanks Java ;D

Yup it certainly adds a huge amount of control. Ill try the Costa and the Panama Volcan tomorrow and see if bringing them up to temp quicker really makes a difference. I imagine itll add a bit more acidity - as in a popper roast. Although having been able to delay the first crack adds another dimension though :-)

    Belinda,

The lid is certainly giving you far more control....

And I like the extension of time between the first and second crack.... looks like you can pretty much adjust the roast profile to do whatever you want- probably more so than most commercial roasters.

Those roasts should be extra good in the cup.

Ive now been experimenting with a lid on the BM and the lid off. The datalogged graphs speak for themselves.

With the lid on the roast is able to be brought up to a high temperature at a rate almost equal to a popper! If you want to of course :-) you have the power to slow it down naturally

when the roast is approaching the first crack stage the lid was removed, at around 170 to 180 C. its evident on the graphs how the roast then slowed down to maintain and extend the roast.

the BM with a clear saucepan lid on. So simple :-)

this first graph shows just how quickly the temperature can rise with the lid on.

the second graph shows a normal roast without the lid on just for comparison. Same day same weather conditions - which were very windy, gusting around the roasting area.

here is the crack analysis graph. you can see where the lid was put on again to bring the temperature up towards the second crack. It does take a bit of juggling.

another simple but effective way to further increase the control over a BM roast :-)

I just want to thank Belinda.

Our Sunbeam Bakehouse popped into the telephone booth, emerged "Corretto", joined up with my X1 heat gun, produced a great roast first time, and was back in the pantry ready to bake bread before anyone noticed - no sign it had ever been anywhere near a coffee bean.

Undoubtedly the most even roast I have ever achieved. Here here to the suggestion about an innovation award. Cheers Belinda.

Good points on Teflon Java and Grendel. I had thought about that, but it all depends on where the flames are aimed and how hot the flame is. If you are going to scorch the teflon you are certainly going to burn the beans to bits at the same time.

Cost isnt really the issue, that was just a side point.

Still it might be worth trying sometime.

Just thinking outside the box really. Thats how the BM got going in the first place :-)

Bottled gas is pretty cheap here - natural gas even cheaper but there are a lot of issues - and the teflon would always be a worry!

Maybe gas heated beans done in the BM could take on a different taste/flavour dimension?

Maybe not. Just have to try it and see really.

And in the process save on electricity costs :-)
Generaly bottled gas costs significantly more per BTU than electricity. Plus you have the cost of the construction of the device. If the intention is to keep costs as low as possible youre probably better off sticking with the heatgun.

Another issue would be the higher heat of the gas degrading the teflon and all the previously discussed potential problems surrounding that issue.
