Yes I do Belinda, and I think that might help as I dont (cant!!) run the HG flat out as its just too hot and heats the beans too fast.

I also run the gun for a minute or two after I finish roasting on the minimum setting (about 60 deg C ) to cool it down after use.

Ill keep my fingers crossed for your gun as well.

Damn heat guns! Honestly there must be a better way to go!!
        Its like everything Belinda,

You get what you pay for..... If long term reliability is a consideration then you couldnt go past any of the more rugged Trade Quality units from Makita, Metabo and DeWalt, etc. Theyre all extremely well made and depending on the model, can offer absolute control over output temperature too. They cost a few bob though..... Anything up to $350 or there-abouts.

        Mal.

          Yeah,

I think thats the main problem with cheaper heat-guns these days, no facility for running the unit with just the fan operating so that you can cool them down quickly after use. I know that years ago, most HGs would allow you to do this but I think its only the more expensive ones now that allow this. I suppose if you were very keen, it wouldnt be hard to install a simple switch to interrupt the heating element circuit while still providing the option of running the fan. Might be something to think about :-?,

          Mal.

The GMC with vairable heat control and 2000w motor does the job well, it was the operator error that caused the problem.
I am impressed by the quality of the HG just embarassed about my stupidity(I restricted the flow of air around the HG which caused the casing to melt, further restricting the fan that blows the air.).

Re: Easy Hands Free Heat Gun Setup: Pt II

The cheap heatguns are - well - cheap! Not only is the price low but so is the build quality.

As Mal said - if you want a "real" heatgun you have to pay about 10X as much- Ill stay with the disposable variety.

              Re switch for cooling-

Most heatguns have a low voltage motor and two "heater" elements- one does the real work the other drops the voltage to the fan....

The ryobi 2 heat produces air at about 60 degrees with the main element off and this cools the gun/main element. (low setting)

The best answer would be to run the fan off a transformer (like one of the popper mods....) but this requires opening the gun and voiding the warranty :-/- as Ive done to fit the external triac control.

If you know your way around electrical gear that approach seems to work well.

Are you using a fan behind the HG to blow away the smoke and cool the HG Presso?

I find that the fan left blowing on the HG after the roast cools it down enough so its ready to go for the next roast, some 10 or 15 minutes later. Sooner sometimes too

Agree Balinda - that makes a BIG difference.

After all these cheap HG are designed for intermittent use only..... with the external fan my HG case gets just slightly walm.

Indeed! They probably would have cited him for RUI also! And you certainly wouldnt want your insurer to find out youd been roasting drunk! Just think what that would do to your rates!! ;D :
